Randi Saunders, Licensed Medical Aesthetician, Licensed Permanent Makeup Technician, and Certified Laser Technician

I often get asked how and why I got started in the field. I had been working for a doctor in the area while going to school. I was getting my basics finished to start the nursing program when he opened the first Medspa in Rogers.

I really hadn't heard of a Medical Aesthetician and knew nothing about the field. However, I quickly became interested and knew I had found my passion. Immediately I decided to dedicate my career to Aesthetics.

It's been over a decade now and I still love it.
It's a very emotionally rewarding profession, especially when you get to help transform people's lives. From lessening scar damage from acne to areola pigmenting after breast cancer to helping restore hair loss, this field is constantly changing. With new advances always coming out, you never get bored.

I love constantly learning new techniques in an ever-changing and growing market. I love that the last decade, I have been able to watch people grow, witnessed families form, and best of all, built friendships with patients. I feel like one lucky girl to have found a career I love at a young age.

Men and Aesthetics: The Top 10 Treatments that Men are Loving!

1. BOTOX  Men aren't the only people concerned with aging and more men are turning to Botox to help erase fine lines and wrinkles in the face. Men are also seeking Botox to help control excessive perspiration. A single treatment can help reduce sweat for up to six to eight months and has no negative side effects.

2. KYBELLA  Even men hate the double chin! This injectable is successful in improving the appearance of the double chin by destroying the fat cells. Many patients see visible results in two to four treatments and retreatment is not expected.

3. FILLER  Men seem to get good results from the contouring under the eyes with fillers because they often are troubled with more pronounced hollows under the eyes. Many are also using fillers for creases in the ears, chin area, and acne scars.

4. LASER HAIR REDUCTION  While laser hair reduction works best on fair skin and dark hair, men who fit the category are turning to this treatment to reduce hair in many areas, such as the face, chest, and back. They are also enjoying waxing as they can manscape their ears, eyebrows and nose.

5. IPL  Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a great solution for red or brown spots, broken capillaries, and pigmented lesions. This treatment is also ideal for rosacea, freckles, and light lines and wrinkles.

6. ULTHERA  This skin-tightening procedure is becoming a favorite for men wanting to tighten slack, loose skin around the jawline and neck. Results can be easily maintained and there's little discomfort involved in the treatments.

7. MICRODERMS AND CHEMICAL PEELS  Men look to these treatments to unclog pores and remove dead skin cells from their faces causes by razor burn, occasional acne, and sun damage. In addition, these treatments also help correct unevenness in the skin, such as dull patches or dark spots.

8. COOLSCULPTING  This treatment is ideal for the man who is concerned about love handles and body fat, and more men are doing CoolSculpting than ever before! This process freezes the fat cells and is perfect for the man who is in shape and exercises but has a trouble spot.

9. TATTOO REMOVAL  Whether for business or personal reasons, many men are shedding their tattoos. Our PicoWay laser delivers energy to the ink in ultra-short pulses that result in a faster treatment with less discomfort. This laser works on a wide range of colors and skin types.

10. THINNING HAIR  Many men hate their thinning hair and we offer several methods to combat this problem. We have the complete Viviscal Professional hair growth supplement, our Dermapen with PRP, and Scalp Micro Pigmentation.

Inside our products: A look at Obagi and Elta MD

By: Kim Bolinger, Licensed Aesthetician  and Registered Medical Assistant

Some of you may or may not be familiar with Obagi Skincare, which is one of the skincare lines we offer here at Hull Aesthetics.  It is physician dispensed, and we carry both the NuDerm system, as well as the CLENZIderm system in their line of skincare products.

The NuDerm system is comprised of 7 steps, which include:

  • Cleanser
  • Toner
  • Clear (prescription strength 4% Hydroquinone for surface discolorations)
  • Exfoderm (daytime exfoliator)
  • Blender (prescription strength 4% Hydroquinone to be mixed nightly with Retin-A for deep discolorations)
  • Hydrate moisturizer
  • Sunshield SPF 50

This system is indicated for discolorations, fine lines or skin that is dull, uneven, rough or sagging.

The CLENZIderm system is comprised of 3 steps, which include:

  • Cleanser
  • Pore Therapy toner
  • Therapeutic Lotion

This system is indicated for mild to moderate acne. Clenziderm uses effective ingredients like Salicylic acid and Benzoyl Peroxide to reduce acne breakouts in as little as 1 week. What makes this system so unique, is the way it is formulated with very small molecules to penetrate deep into the Dermis.

EltaMD skincare product line includes deep yet gentle cleansers, intense moisturizers and innovative formulas that repair the visible signs of aging.

EltaMD is only available through dispensing physician offices. Their line of skincare products include deep, yet gentle cleansers and innovative moisturizers for normal, sensitive, and troubled skin. They use zinc oxide, which blocks the widest spectrum of UVA and UVB rays.  This helps in protecting the skin from premature aging and sunburn.

You can check out our entire line of EltaMD SPF's, as well as cleansers and moisturizers. There is literally one for every skin type out there.

EltaMD UV Aero Continuous Spray Broad Spectrum 45 SPF

I love a clean, sheer sunscreen and this is probably my favorite!

It is a continuous spray sunscreen that is zinc-based. It goes on white, but dries clear and is a full body sunscreen. This convenient sun protection makes it fast and easy for those hard to reach areas.  It is also:

  • Oil-free, non-comedogenic
  • Water resistant for 80 minutes
  • Fragrance, Oil, Paraben, Sensitivity and CFC Free

As always, remember to always be sun smart by wearing sunscreen and reapplying every two hours, or after swimming or sweating.

Many people are not applying their sunscreen properly or are unsure of which SPF to purchase. When shopping for a sunscreen, remember these quick facts:

  • SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays
  • SPF 30 blocks 97%
  • SPF 50 blocks 98%.

With each application, about an ounce of sunscreen needs to be applied. That's enough to fill a shot glass and is the amount the average person needs.

"My motto from the start is, less is more and you can always add but you can't take away."

Randi has a Hull Lotta Love for Permanent Makeup

I get a lot of patients that walk through our doors nervous about their appointments for Permanent Makeup, but excited to hear about the procedure and results. My motto from the start is, less is more and you can always add but you can't take away.

I want to be able to enhance a patient's natural appearance and set realistic expectations, not give him or her a picture of a makeup wearing celebrity that isn't feasible. I won't talk someone into permanent makeup, but I relay all the information I can so patients can decide if it is something they really want.

I frequently do eyeliner, eyebrow shaping, and even areola and scalp pigmentation. I want people as comfortable as possible and happy when they leave here. When a woman goes through breast cancer, it's a very emotional and difficult time and I want the areola procedure to be as pleasant as possible.

The scalp pigmentation and PRP application for hair loss on both men and women can be life changing. I also see a lot of women with thinning eyebrows and eyelashes that see a big improvement through permanent makeup and Latisse.

The next new and exciting procedure I have starting doing is Microblading. It has caught a lot of attention on Pinterest and Instagram because of the natural looking hairline strokes. As with all Permanent Makeup, it is imperative that each patient receive a consult first as these are not treatments you rush into. Anyone receiving Permanent Makeup is made aware that there is a lot involved in the prepping and aftercare for optimal results and long-term maintenance.
