C.A.R.P. has been celebrating National Seniors Day, annually, on October 1st, since it was established in 2011.

We have raised our flags, hosted hundreds of events across Canada and highlighted the contributions that older adults continue to make in our society. We are indeed proud of those contributions!

However, we are just out of another Federal election where the pressing issues of affordability and health care for seniors were largely ignored.

Political leaders in all levels of government have made the needs of older Canadians another check box in their campaign promise list; offering vague and distant solutions during campaigns in order to secure our votes, but fail to act on those promises, over and over again.

We're into a not unexpected fourth wave of a pandemic that has killed thousands of older Canadians and exposed the lack of investment in our long term care institutions. Recommendations made by boards of inquiry from the first wave of the pandemic sit on a shelf. Calls for increased spending on home care and caregiver supports - and a much better return on the billions of dollars invested every year on healthcare, are ignored.

Age discrimination remans rampant yet quietly accepted in Canadian society.

Pleas for a greater safety net for struggling seniors on CPP, OAS and GIS go unheeded.

It is getting harder and harder for many seniors to make ends meet as they deal with the worry about financing their longevity and aging in dignity.

This year, on National Seniors Day, we're not inviting the political leaders to come and ‘spin’ us with empty promises at our national event. This year we’re calling out their inaction, with a national, virtual meeting of members to lay out the issues that are most pressing and calling all of our members to action!
