Digital print providers rely on sophisticated productivity software to run their operations. The latest tools incorporate core aspects of a workflow from end to end, including online ordering, print management, management information systems (MIS), production workflow, and output workflow.
Analyst firm InfoTrends refers to this as a compact workflow. According the company, instead of trying to satisfy every technical or business need with singular focus software, compact workflows integrate with existing software solutions or implement the correct feature set required for high-volume, on demand work.
Print providers are considering implementing a compact or end-to-end workflow into existing digital and hybrid operations today more than ever as the need for greater efficiency becomes paramount in an increasingly competitive market. These same organizations may have legacy, on premise solutions in place, but must see past the challenges of overhauling their established processes to benefit in the long term.
Find out how Avanti has helped digital, offset, hybrid and large/grand format shops meet customer demands efficiently and cost effectively. Discover the critical role that MIS can play in your organization to help you achieve your goals by joining us for one of our upcoming live webinars Thursdays at 2PM EST.
Avanti Slingshot for Marketing Services Providers
It has been a common strategy for print providers to diversify into markets beyond ink on paper. The print and marketing services business is increasingly reliant upon multiple lines of business. You need to be able to quote, accept and fulfill orders in addition to printing jobs – meaning that orders often consist of a variety of line items which could be produced or fulfilled in a variety of ways.
Join us for a demonstration of how Avanti Slingshot can be used to track these offerings right alongside your traditional print-based production.
A Day In The Life of the Automated Print Shop
Are you curious about what an automated print shop looks like?
Still wondering what benefits a fully-integrated Print MIS can mean to YOUR business?
Join us as our experts take you through the Day In The Life of the Automated Print Shop, featuring Avanti Slingshot
Plan, Cost and Manage all Facets of the Direct Mail Process
Many print shops have added Direct Mail Services to their portfolio in order to become the “one-stop shop” for their customers. However, managing the Marketing Services portfolio of business is very different than managing Print Production. Mail Estimating alone has some unique challenges and requirements that traditional Print Estimating cannot handle – postage and drops being two key examples.
Avanti Slingshot’s Direct Mail Management module is designed for print shops that provide direct mail services as part of their product offering and need to plan, cost and manage all facets of the Direct Mail process.
Avanti Slingshot Large Format & Grand Format Estimating
Historically, Large & Grand Format printing required years of experience in both estimating and production planning to properly manage. Avanti Slingshot’s Grand Format Estimating simplifies the process by taking into consideration unique imposition/layouts, material requirements, edge sealing, grommet placement, square inc/feet calculations and substrate utilization to optimize workflow. It accounts for all aspects of the process, including tiling, handling multiple rolls across the bed, ganging, as well as logistics (e.g. finishing, assembly, installation and multi-location shipping).

Case Study: ASU Tackles Big MIS Challenges with an Avanti Slingshot
When Cathy Skoglund comes to work each day at Arizona State University’s Print & Imaging Lab, she has two important goals in mind: provide hands-on training for tomorrow’s graphic communication industry leaders—and sell enough print to fund goal #1.
The Lab, which operates as a self-sufficient print shop, provides a unique experiential learning environment for ASU graphic arts students. It has a range of equipment including digital presses, digital large-format printers, offset presses and a wide array of finishing equipment. The operation needs to work efficiently, accurately, within deadlines and – since campus departments are under no obligation to patronize the lab – maintain a high level of customer satisfaction.
There were challenges. Full-time employees and students were trying to manage multiple “islands of automation”—standalone systems for functions like estimating, ftp & job submission, web-to-print, invoicing, shipping and purchase order generation. The systems were only tied together by manually re-entering the information among disparate applications.
Particularly troubling was their homegrown estimating system, which was non-intuitive, cumbersome and left much room for error. The system was based around two Excel spreadsheets, with cell formulas constantly in need of fine-tuning to accommodate the nuances of each job. “It was so complicated, only two of us had the experience needed to produce an accurate estimate,” said Skoglund.
