Into The Quarry

It's such a great feeling when you hit the perfect drive across the quarry (15th). Unfortunately some of us don't get that wonderful feeling as often as we would like but the 15th is a very popular and special feature of the course. However the quarry was not part of the original plans for Clandon Golf.

Originally, what are now holes 13, 14 & 15, were due to go into the woods (heading east from hole 5). However,  some very rare orchids were found there by environmentalists, so an alternative had to be found. The quarry was the obvious choice, but posed a number of problems. It had been used as a ‘tip’ in the 1960’s and had a ‘clay cap’ on top of it which meant that it held the water – completely opposite to the rest of the site.

A tremendous amount of work was done to create what you find today, three very memorable golf holes. The 13th fairway had to be raised (by up to 18’ in places) to enable the hole to gently climb the hill. 10’ of chalk was added to all the playing areas (to enable this area to have the same drainage qualities as the rest of the site) and the causeway was constructed on Hole 15 to enable golfers to get to the fairway.

Dunsfold Aerodrome Golf Club

A proud era of aviation history came to an end in December 2000 when British Aerospace closed its site at Dunsfold Aerodrome with the loss of 900 jobs. The airfield was built in 1942 by the Canadian Army and civilian contractors as a class A bomber airfield for Army Co-operation Command and operated by the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1942–1944.

In 1950 The Hawker Aircraft Company acquired the lease of the site. Dunsfold became internationally known for development of the Hunter jet fighter and the Harrier the first vertical take off fighter/bomber. Hawker Siddeley became part of British Aerospace in 1977.

Founded in 1965 Dunsfold Aerodrome Golf Club was a 9 hole course built round the perimeter track of the airfield and crossed some emergency runways. Flat, with few bunkers and small greens the course was sadly missed when it closed in 2000

A group of former British Aerospace employees and members of Dunsfold Aerodrome Golf Club now meet up at 10am every Wednesday morning at Clandon Golf.

Love Is In The Air

It's St. Val's on the 14th of the month. Are you going to spend Valentines day with the love of your life - golf?

Why not treat a  loved one to a round or even a membership?

"Golf is like love. One day you think you are too old and the next day you want to do it again" Roberto de Vicenzo, Argentinan smoothie who won the British Open in 1967

“Our main phone line has been been out of order since December 20th. We have been coping best we can by diverting calls to our mobiles but we know there have been problems and I apologise for any inconvenience”. Gordon Grandison  - General Manager
