WHITES

Lyrarakis ‘voila’ Assyrtiko 2017 (13.5%) from £9.99. This white is from Crete and it’s my star buy - tastes like the best Chablis in the world for a fraction of the price. Crete has some awesome vineyards and the Assyrtiko grape in this wine is full of piercing intensity. Amazing aperitif, lovely with green olives and if you’re anywhere near shellfish this Christmas hoover it up.

Domaine Fichet Macon Burgy Blanc 2016 (13%) from £11.99. This is great value for decent white Burgundy with proper elegance that tastes like a more expensive bottle than it is.

REDS

Villa Belinda Vino Varietal 2017 (14.5%) £8.99. This Spanish red is one I’ll be recommending a lot over the coming weeks and it's worth buying six bottles while you can. Lovely huge deep fruit lashed with fragrance. Just velvet and the perfect go-to all round red for Christmas.

L’Orangeraie Cabernet Franc 2017 (14%) from £8.99. If you like lighter reds like Pinot Noir, try this French Cabernet Franc. You could even serve it chilled (say 30 mins in the fridge) and treat it like butch rosé. Great with hams and lighter bites, nice and silky.

SWEET

Pedro’s Almacenista Selection PX (15%) from £9.99. Jet black and rich as liquid dates, serve this unctuous sherry chilled with your Christmas pudding (or mince pies/Christmas cake) - also good with a festive box of chocolates or a chocolate brownie. And before Christmas, pour some of this over a scoop of vanilla ice cream as a cheeky pudding, it’s ruddy epic.
