Sheridan Center Teaching Certificate Programs

Sign up NOW for the Sheridan Center's 2016-17 Teaching Certificate programs:

  • The Sheridan Teaching Seminar (Certificate I) is a semester-long program in which members of the Brown teaching community aim to improve their students' learning and their own experiences as teachers through a reflective exploration of their own practices and beliefs about teaching. This hybrid course combines online modules with four in-person meetings on topics such as inclusive teaching, communication skills, and learning design.   • The Teaching Consultant Program (Certificate IV) is a year-long program designed to allow members of the Brown teaching community to develop peer observation and feedback skills, and to gain expertise in workshop and discussion facilitation. Consultants also conduct teaching observations in Brown University classrooms to collect feedback for the purposes of instructional enhancement. (Completion of Certificate 1: The Sheridan Teaching Seminar is a prerequisite.) For more information or to register, please click here.

Planning or revising your syllabus?

The Provost's Office has issued new guidelines for Fall 2016 Brown University syllabi. The Sheridan Center has developed new online Course Design resources to support faculty in re-crafting their syllabi, such as Creating a Brown University syllabus and sample syllabi that follow these guidelines.

New Faculty Orientation to Teaching at Brown

This orientation for faculty and postdoctoral fellows new to teaching at Brown features an overview of teaching at Brown by the Dean of the College and the Dean of the Graduate School, panels providing student and faculty perspectives on teaching at Brown, and the opportunity for small-group discussion about university resources.

Teaching for the First Time

In this hands-on, interactive workshop designed for faculty and postdoctoral fellows who are new to teaching at Brown, participants will review strategies for the first day of class, discuss ways to refelect on one's teaching, and have the opportunity to ask questions about teaching for the first time

New TA Orientation to Teaching at Brown features a hands-on workshop to help prepare graduate TAs for the first days of class, provides the opportunity for interactive discussions of teaching roles and responsibilities with experienced TAs and faculty, and offers teaching resources.

Co-sponsored by the Graduate School and the Harriet W. Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning.

Leading a First Readings Discussion: A Workshop for Facilitators
Thursday, August 25th and Monday, August 29th
12-1:00pm
Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning (Sciences Library, 201 Thayer Street, 7th Floor)

This workshop, led by Sheridan Associate Director Jessica Metzler, will equip participants with tools and strategies to encourage thoughtful and productive discussion of My Beloved World, Brown University’s 2016 First Readings book. Participants will learn techniques for creating a seminar environment conducive to discussion and develop strategies for starting, sustaining, and concluding a discussion of the book. This workshop will be offered twice and is appropriate for faculty and staff who will be facilitating a First Readings seminar. Lunch will be served.     These full-time staff positions support all members of Brown’s teaching and learning community by contributing to Sheridan Center programs, services and publications. Assistant/Associate Directors will consult with instructors, design and lead workshops, and develop programs and resources around evidence-based teaching and learning responsive to a diverse student body.

  • Please forward these part-time positions for graduate students to potential candidates:
    Graduate Student Writing Center Associates sharpen their own teaching and writing skills while giving back to the Brown community. Associates hold hour-long, one-on-one conferences on writing with any member of the Brown community who wishes to discuss written work. Associates discuss strategies for writing in a variety of writing styles, including papers for humanities and science-related academic courses.  Please refer to the Writing Center's webpage for application requirements and submission details.
