Before he coined that now infamous saying "What's this then ....." as the Tiddas on ABC TV's runaway success Black Comedy, Steven Oliver (pictured) was busy putting pen to paper to bring to life the story of Steve, the main character in a new series of Got Suga radio skits about Type 2 diabetes.
The new skits build on the success of the previous radio plays featuring Gary and Evie, developed with Natjul Aboriginal Performing Arts, Diabetes Queensland and Brisbane Indigenous Media Association (BIMA).
For the current series, Diabetes Queensland asked BIMA to create a new range of characters.
Oliver, a communications officer with BIMA, was joined by co-writers Jamie Dunn and Ian Calder to bring to life the story of Steve, a 40-something year old Aboriginal man who learns he has Type 2 diabetes. In writing Steve's story, the creative team was keen to utilise comedy.
"Comedy within writing has also been a great educational tool," Steven explained.
If you get people to laugh, they often forget that they're also learning."
As a result, 10 radio skits were produced and broadcast on 98.9FM. They are also available online and free for the Indigenous media, general public and health professionals to access.
