How often do other people have sex? For his work on perceptions, Bobby Duffy asked a bunch of people what they thought. The goal was not to pry into personal lives but to find out how accurately we predict each other’s habits. Across the board, he found people dramatically overestimate how active others are in the sack – often to the point of absurdity. In fact, if our guesses were accurate, you’d wonder how we’d get anything else done.

A few decades ago, it was not uncommon for adults to tell bullied children that they should just ignore their tormentors and move on with their lives. But recent research suggests it is not that simple. As Kalliopi Tzani-Pepelasi explains, the consequences of childhood bullying can often last a lifetime – shaping thinking patterns and behaviour in negative ways that we may not always be aware of.

Is it true that foods such as celery, cucumber and grapefruit contain fewer calories than the amount needed to digest them? Nutritionist Louise Dunford has bad news for anyone who believes in this myth. Meanwhile, chemist Simon Cotton reveals what’s really in that “healthier” electronic cigarette.
