***LEGISLATIVE ALERT***
McCarthy not to pursue house speakership
WASHINGTON—House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, (R-Calif.), announced today that he will not pursue the House leadership role as speaker even as the Republican conference was expected to nominate the lawmaker.
What happens next remains unclear. House Speaker John Boehner, (R-Ohio), said in a statement that he would remain as speaker until the House votes to elect a new speaker. "We will announce the date for this election at a later date, and I'm confident we will elect a new Speaker in the coming weeks," he said.
Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Jason Chaffetz, (R-Utah), who also represents the Navajo Nation in the southeastern portion of Utah, said he will continue to pursue the speakership. He announced his bid for the top leader position on Sunday.
