Le Québec maritime. Bas-Saint-Laurent, Gaspésie, Còte-Nord, Ìles de la madeleine. Une destination touristique tournée vers la mer

  Hello July | 2011

Québec maritime is home to spectacular scenery that can be experienced in many different ways. Cycling is a great way to discover the maritime regions of Québec at your own pace, without missing any of its many attractions. Take the Route Verte cycling trail, meander through national parks or explore local, regional or interregional trails and enjoy the fresh air!

Le Québec maritime’s Blog
Our two blogging teams had a memorable trip in Québec maritime, if their stories, photos and videos are anything to go by! To find out more about their trips, visit the Québec maritime blog as well as our Facebook and YouTube pages.

WORTH A VISIT!

Saguenay Fjord National Park
Surrounded by steep cliffs and over 100 kilometres (60 miles) long, the Saguenay Fjord is one of the longest and most spectacular fjords in the world. Saguenay Fjord National Park offers many outdoor activities and interpretation sites, as well as several lodging options, including cabins, huts and campsites. Visit our website for photos!

Anticosti National Park
Located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Anticosti Island is a unique destination featuring steep cliffs, yawning canyons, secluded caves, a spectacular waterfall higher than Niagara (76 m / 250 feet), 24 salmon rivers, over 160,000 white-tailed deer and more! Anticosti is more accessible than you think!

Two Historic Sites of Canada Worth Visiting
Visit the Battle of the Restigouche National Historic Site of Canada in Pointe-à-la-Croix, in Gaspésie, to learn about the last naval battle between the French and English, which sealed the fate of New France. Or visit the Pointe-au-Père Lighthouse National Historic Site of Canada, in Bas-Saint-Laurent, and climb to the top of the second tallest lighthouse in Canada!

Recipes of the Month
Once again, the Québec maritime team would like to introduce you to some of our regional flavours. This month, Marie-Pier and Yanick mainly made dishes inspired by recipes from the Reford Gardens: Beef and Daylily Buds Tartare, Labrador Tea and Cheese Tartlets , Yellow Carrot Salad with Wild Mint Jelly and Wild Blueberry and Lavender Cheesecake. They also made Smoked Salmon Verrines with Yogurt, Tomatoes and Basil. Our whole team sampled these dishes—be sure to read the comments after each recipe!

Moose, Caribou and Deer
Several members of the deer family make their home in the forests of Québec maritime. Moose, the largest member of this family, is also the most abundant, especially in the Matane Wildlife Reserve. Gaspésie is also home to the only caribou herd south of the St. Lawrence River, while Anticosti Island is renowned for its large population of over 160,000 white-tailed deer. Read more...

  THE LIGHTHOUSE TRAIL

History buffs and sea lovers will want to explore the Lighthouse Trail. Over 40 lighthouses stand guard along the coasts of Québec maritime, and many have been transformed into interpretation sites or inns. Discover these sentinels of the St. Lawrence!

  Bas-Saint-Laurent

Three lighthouses in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region, including one of the tallest in Canada, are open to the public. Spend a night in the Pot à l’Eau-de-Vie Lighthouse or in one of the lighthouse keeper’s houses on Île Verte and let the sound of the waves lull you to sleep.

  Côte-Nord

In Côte-Nord, observe marine mammals from the vantage point of two lighthouses: Bon-Désir and Pointe-des-Monts. Further east, the Mingan Archipelago is home to the Île aux Perroquets et Petite Île au Marteau lighthouses, which can both be accessed during guided excursions. Finally, you can stay in former lighthouse keeper’s houses at Pointe-Nord on Anticosti Island.

  Gaspésie

The Gaspésie coast is dotted with lighthouses, including La Martre, which has a unique wooden structure. On the east side of the peninsula, visit the Pointe-à-la-Renommée Lighthouse , which is located in an amazing vista; climb to the top of Cap-des-Rosiers, the tallest lighthouse in Canada; or hike out to Cap Gaspé Lighthouse in Forillon National Park of Canada.

  Îles de la Madeleine

The archipelago is home to five lighthouses, all of which are located in enchanting sites. Don’t forget your camera!
