New research shows typical rents for shared housing in Australian cities can leave people on Newstart with less than $100 a week to live on. As Simone Casey and Liss Ralston write, $14 a day doesn’t allow for the costs of job seeking. Their analysis shows there are only two regions in all of Australia where single unemployed people would have any hope of finding affordable rents. The evidence of the need to increase Newstart and Rent Allowance is compelling.
