Opening Reception: Lost Places in the Mojave
When: December 02, 2011 1pm - 3pm
A new exhibition at the UNLV Barrick Museum, Lost Places in the Mojave: Photographs by Julian Kilker, brings Las Vegas photographer Julian Kilker’s innovative technique to bear on the decay and ruin that fill the human landscape. Kilker feels that decay evokes mystery, poignancy, and mortality, but it also provides clues about how an artifact or place was created and cared for. In most cases, there is a history, often instructive, behind the questions raised by abandoned and decaying environments. Kilker uses night photography and light painting to juxtapose decaying buildings with streaking lights from passing vehicles to suggest such cycles, as well as wide angle perspectives to emphasize the open spaces and breached interior-exterior boundaries of the deteriorating structures.
Lost Places in the Mojave will be on display from December 2, 2011 to January 22, 2012.

Maya - A Thirty Year Retrospective January 13 – April 2, 2012
Join us for a photographic exploration of the changing lives of contemporary Mayan Indians, as seen through the lens of Michael Plyler's camera. Plyler's black and white images record the beauty and resolute strength of this fascinating culture. Plyler's work spans the early eighties through 2008, including some of the most intense years of the civil war which plagued the country for thirty six years. Trained as an archaeologist, Plyler brings an anthropological perspective to his photography, and his work is in permanent collections throughout the Western hemisphere. An artist reception and University Forum lecture will be held January 26 5:30 - 9 pm.
Red January 19 - 22, 8 pm
This student-led production of John Logan’s Tony Award-winning play explores the process of creation and the temptations of commercialism through the work of Mark Rothko. The one-act play is a dialogue between Rothko and his assistant as the painter works on his famed series for the Four Seasons restaurant. The play will be presented in the round in our community gallery and is being organized by UNLV theater professor Clarence Gilyard (Matlock, Walker, Texas Ranger).
Fantastic Things January 27 - March 18, 2018
Fantastic Things is an exhibition of work from seven artists contributing to Opportunity Village’s Art Enrichment Program. These artists share a common approach; inspired by the intuitive act of repetitive mark-making and an interest in exploring the nature of their materials. This exhibition presents, in series, the distinct and dynamic results of these explorations for each of these contemporary artists.
Opportunity Village’s Art Enrichment Program is a progressive visual arts studio that gives artists with intellectual and related disabilities the opportunity to find and express their creative passions. Here they develop a studio practice as working artists, building a body of work for exhibition and sale. The program was also designed to promote self-expression, social interaction, and the development of peer relationships.
