Top 5 ways you can help a student struggling in your class
September 28, 2017 As we mentioned in last week's INSIGHTS, we are entering that time of the semester when you may notice some students struggling in your classes. It’s a good idea to get a head start on assisting them with these issues – here are the top five ways you can help. - Fill out an Early Academic Report (EAR) on each student. The Barnard EAR is an internal document that will enable you to notify the Dean of Studies’ Office if a student is not performing well in your course. Here is the link: https://barnard-advocate.symplicity.com/public_report Note: Please use the Barnard-specific EAR, NOT the Columbia-generated Academic Difficulty Reports. Barnard's EAR is customized for Barnard and unlike Columbia’s document, does not ask you to put a grade on a student's current work, but instead provides us more insight into how and why a student might be underperforming.
Once you submit the EAR, a note will be sent to the student’s Class Dean who will reach out to the student for a meeting. You may be contacted by the Class Dean or Adviser for assistance on how best to help the student.
- Suggest they keep in touch with you by visiting during your office hours and attending any review sessions you hold. Remind them of assistance provided by TAs, and make certain they have met and talked to their assigned TA about the issues they are having in the class.
- Remind students of Barnard’s FREE group-based tutoring, mentoring & networking opportunities. These large group-based help sessions are held on a regular weekly schedule - allowing for students to drop-in when they need assistance - and are grouped by subject. Details can be found here: https://barnard.edu/dos/academic-support/peer-to-peer/group.
- If you have students who need more assistance than can be provided in group-based tutoring, remind them that Barnard provides FREE small group/one-on-one tutoring through the HEOP/ASEP and Dean of Studies Offices. This tutoring service pairs students with a specific peer tutor for the semester, and sessions are either one-on-one or small groups of two to three students. More information can be found here: https://barnard.edu/dos/academic-support/peer-to-peer/individual.
- If you serve as an Adviser, now is the time to reach out to your Advisees via email and remind them that you are available should they be having difficulties in any of their classes, feel they are in the wrong section in a particular subject, or are considering dropping a course before the Oct. 10th deadline.
It's important that we work together to assist our students and the earlier we put together a plan for each and every Barnard student who is struggling in a course, the more we can make sure all our students have a successful semester.
