HAPPY EASTER

Chair's Update

Welcome to the March issue and thanks for taking the time to attend  our second gathering at Ina Grafton Gage. Last month's gathering had a mixed bag of weather events and it was cancelled.

This month we had two presenters, Kerrie Pickering from Pro Health Navigators and Cindy Forster MPP Welland.

Kerrie's presentation was " How to make the most of your health care experience " with the following benefits of patient centered care;

  • Patients who participate in their care have better outcomes overall
  • Patients are more likely to follow a plan of care when they help to design the plan
  • Patients who recieve patient-centered care report higher patient satisfaction scores
  • Patients are " Partners in Care ", which shares responsibility with the health care
  • Patients have a unique ability to provide feedback on the service they receive.

10 tips to improve your health care experience;

  1. Bring a buddy
  2. Hand hygiene
  3. Request that all providers check patient ID band before giving medication, procedure or patient interaction
  4. Be an active partner in your plan of care
  5. Know your medication and dosage
  6. Get a copy of the procedure and diagnostic test results
  7. Know the name of each provider
  8. Be flexible, don't just refuse
  9. Get informed
  10. Speak up, Ask,  Ask

Cindy Forster's presentation  was " Don't increase drug costs "

The facts regarding the changes that the Ontario government wants to vote in the legislature by the end of March 2016:

  • The annual deductible under the Ontario Drug Benefit program for most seniors will be increased from $100 to $170
  • Co-pays will increase from $6.11 to $7.11
  • Ontario seniors need an average of 8 prescriptions each year
  • 1 in 3 Ontario seniors need 10 or more prescriptions each year.

That means the average senior on a fixed income will pay more each month to get the medications they need to stay healthy.

Reminder to ALL that the presenters and topics are driven by the membership and as such we need your continued input, please email caprniagarasocial@gmail.com with your suggestions.

It is very important that if you change your email adress that you notify carpniagarambr@gmail.com such that your update can be managed for the chapter and also for CARP national.
