Waar W.A.S.P. precies voor staat kan niemand met zekerheid zeggen. Ook frontman extraordinaire Blackie Lawless niet. Of dat laat hij toch uitschijnen. Gissen dan maar. Naast suggesties als ‘White Anglo-Saxon Protestants’ of het meer bizarre ‘We Ate Savory Pancakes’ gaan de meeste stemmen op voor ‘We Are Sexual Perverts’, een leuze die ook hun eerste plaat siert. Die dateert van 1984 en sloeg de toenmalige Sunset Strip met verstomming. Logisch met nummers als ‘I Wanna Be Somebody’, ‘On Your Knees’ en ‘L.O.V.E Machine’ natuurlijk. Of het beruchte ‘Animal (Fuck Like A Beast)’. Dat werd dankzij enkele steigerende moraalridders in de VS wegens te verfoeilijk zelfs van de plaat gehaald. Niet dat Blackie en zijn steeds wisselende vriendjes zich daar ook maar iets van aantrokken. Virtuoze schunnigheden als schaars geklede dames vastketenen op het podium en het publiek met rauw vlees bekogelen leverden hen het label shockrock op. (Lees meer)

MICHAEL SCHENKER krijgt op Alcatraz 2015 de status van ‘Special Guest’ en dat is een verdiende eer. Schenker behoort tot de meest invloedrijke gitaristen uit de rockgeschiedenis en heeft na een aantal turbulente jaren zijn elan teruggevonden. Met een ritmesectie die vroeger bij The Scorpions de groove en de drive aangaf, zit hij weer gebeiteld. Herman Rarebell (drums) en Francis Bochholz (bass) hebben nog niets van hun streken verleerd. Voeg daar een topzanger zoals Doogie White (o.a. ex-Rainbow) en de ervaren rot Wayne Findley (keyboards, ritmegitaar) aan toe en je kunt naar de oorlog! Michael is de broer van Scorpions-boegbeeld Rudolf Schenker. Hij maakt tot 1973 deel uit van de allereerste incarnatie van diens band. Na één lp vertrekt Michael naar UFO en neemt met hen enkele klassiek geworden lp’s op en één van de beste liveplaten ooit: ‘Strangers In The Night’ (1979). Michael is geen gewone jongen en hij verlaat UFO dan ook op turbulente wijze. Zijn muzikaal talent blijft echter intact en zijn solocarrière met The Michael Schenker Group neemt in 1981 een vliegende start. (Lees meer)

Mochten wij een slogan moeten bedenken voor de Zweedse band WOLF, dan zou die er ongeveer als volgt uitzien: ‘Real metal for true bastards!’. Het is zanger/gitarist Niklas Stålvind die z’n buik vol heeft van grunge en punkrock en het rond 1995 meer dan tijd vindt om daar wat aan te veranderen. Hij hangt wat post-its op in de lokale supermarkten te Örebro en niet veel later heeft hij een band samen die aanvankelijk nog covers speelt. Sindsdien sleutelen de heren aan het met eighties metal bezaaide pad, waar zeer herkenbaar wortels te vinden zijn van bands als Saxon, Accept, Judas Priest, Mercyful Fate en Iron Maiden. (Lees meer)

What W.A.S.P. means exactly, nobody can say with certainty. Even the extraordinaire frontman Blackie Lawless cannot tell us. Or that’s what he lets us understand. So we guess. In addition to suggestions like ‘White Anglo-Saxon Protestants’ or the more bizarre ‘We Ate Savoury Pancakes’, most votes are going for ‘We Are Sexual Perverts’, a slogan that also graced their first record. Which dates back to 1984 and then hit the Sunset Strip speechless which was logical with songs like ‘I Wanna Be Somebody’, ‘On Your Knees’ and of course ‘L.O.V.E. Machine’. Or the infamous ‘Animal (Fuck Like A Beast)’. This song was removed from the record in the US thanks to some prancing moralists, not that Blackie and his ever-changed buddies ever cared about this matter. Virtuosic obscenities as scantily clad women chained on stage and pelting the audience with raw meat gave them the label of shock rock but such a theatrical entertainment is no longer present. MICHAEL SCHENKER is having the status of ‘Special Guest’ on Alcatraz 2015 and that is a well-deserved honour. Schenker is one of the most influential guitarists in rock history and has regained his successful drive after several turbulent years. With a rhythm section from the earlier Scorpions who are indicating the groove and drive, he is back in business. Herman Rarebell (drums) and Francis Bochholz (bass) are old-timers in the field. Add a top singer like Doogie White (f.e. ex-Rainbow) and the professional Wayne Findley (keyboards, rhythm guitar) and you can go to war. Michael is the brother from Scorpions guitarist and founding member Rudolf Schenker. Until 1973 he was part of the incarnation of his band. After one album Michael leaves for UFO and record some classics with the band including one of the best live albums ever: “Strangers In The Night” (1979). Michael is no ordinary guy so he left UFO in a turbulent manner. (Read more)

If we have to come up with a slogan for the Swedish band WOLF, it would be something like this: : ‘Real metal for true bastards!’. It’s singer/guitar player Niklas Stàlvind who really had enough from the grunge and punk rock, and around 1995 it was time for a change. He hangs some post-it’s in the local supermarkets in Örebro and not much later he has a band that initially is playing covers. Ever since the guys are working on the eighties metal strewn path whith very reckonable roots to find from bands like Saxon, Accept, Judas Priest, Mercyful Fate and Iron Maiden. (Read more)
