Sunset Song
SNEAK PREVIEW FROM THE 2016 PROGRAM

Here’s a sneak preview of two more movies from BOFA’s exciting 2016 program.

SUNSET SONG

David Stratton calls Terence Davies (The Deep Blue Sea, The House of Mirth) “one of Britain’s finest contemporary directors” and has just given Sunset Song four stars. Sun, sex and sumptuousness rule in this adaptation of Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s novel, which centres, like so many of Davies’ films,  around a strong female character, spanning six years in the life of Chris, one of the numerous children of a tyrannical Scottish farmer on the eve of the First World War. Stratton writes that “Davies’ skill at bringing the most intimate details of family life to the screen is second to none” and Sunset Song is a sustained, moving reflection on the human life cycle at a time when people were more in tune with the earth. As a footnote, Davies shot the summer scenes in New Zealand, where the weather was slightly more co-operative than Scotland!!

Girl Asleep
GIRL ASLEEP

We had already booked this quirky Australian coming-of-age comedy for BOFA, so we were delighted to see that it has just won the richest prize on the Australian festival circuit – the $100,000 Best Film prize at the CinefestOZ festival in West Australia.  It was the unanimous choice of a jury headed by Gillian Armstrong. On the cusp of turning fifteen Greta can't bear to leave her childhood.  She floats in a bubble of loser-dom with her only friend Elliott, until her parents throw her a surprise 15th birthday party where she delves into fairytale and fantasy - a detour into her dark and dangerous subconscious. Based on the hit stage play by Mathew Whittet, Girl Asleep is a funny and deeply moving journey into the absurd, hilarious, scary and beautiful mind of a teenager. It will also be released in the US where Variety called it “an exuberant example of imaginative filmmaking”.

Don’t miss it.
