Culture Tip Hickory Hardwood Flooring

Remodeling 101: Hardwood Flooring

Upgrading your flooring to hardwood is one of the smartest ways to make a room look distinguished and raise your home’s value. It is also a project that an experienced do-it-yourselfer can tackle.

Kevin Engstrom of Yoder Lumber shared his tips for a hardwood floor installation.

  • Only use fresh material. If you use materials from different batches, you will get varying levels of moisture in the boards, which can cause installation difficulty.
  • You can use narrow or wide boards, or you can use a mixture of sizes. Flooring with wide boards is more expensive than flooring with narrow boards, and both are more expensive than using a mixture of sizes.
  • The harder the wood the better: red oak, white oak, hickory
  • Rustic hickory has great character for flooring but can be more difficult to clean.
  • When you are ready to get started, all you need is your square footage measurements and your inspiration!

Holmes County has several good lumber companies to work with on a flooring remodel project. Yoder Lumber is available by phone at (330) 674-1435 or in person at 7100 CR 407, south of Millersburg.

Dining White Chicken Chili

Recipe: White Chicken Chili

This chili recipe for cold-weather and snowy, blustery days is the perfect food to quickly warm up frigid fingers. It comes from Amanda at the Berlin Farmstead Restaurant.

Ingredients
2-14.5 oz cans white beans
1 tablespoon canola oil
1 medium jalapeño pepper, minced
2 medium poblano peppers, chopped
1 large onion, chopped
4 garlic cloves, minced
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1½ teaspoons coriander
1 teaspoon chili powder
4 cups chicken broth
4 cups cooked chicken, diced
¼ cup chopped cilantro leaves

Instructions
Drain and rinse beans. In a medium bowl, mash half of the beans with a potato masher until chunky. Reserve the beans until needed.

Add the canola oil to a large Dutch oven and heat it over medium heat. Add peppers, onions, garlic and sauté until soft and fragrant, about 5 minutes. Season vegetables with salt and pepper. Add the cumin, coriander and chili powder and continue to sauté for 1 more minute.

Stir in the chicken broth and bring to a simmer. Add the beans and continue to simmer for 20 more minutes. After 20 minutes stir in cooked chicken, cilantro and simmer until heated through, about 5 minutes. Serve the chili with sour cream and crushed tortilla chips.

Prep time: 20 minutes
Cook time: 35 minutes
Yield: 4-6 servings

Christmas Cookie Tour Raises $24,000 for Charity

The sixth annual Christmas Cookie Tour of Inns contributed more than $24,000 to Northeast Ohio charities this year. The Love Center Food Pantry, Life Care Hospice of Holmes and Wayne Counties and University of Akron’s School of Nutrition and Dietetics each received more than $8,000 for their organizations.

Visitors from Ohio and nearby states totaled 1,350 during the two-day event last December. The Cookie Tour consisted of 12 inns, each which had a special gingerbread treat for its visitors.

New this year were gingerbread houses contributed by the University of Akron’s School of Nutrition and Dietetics. The program had teams of students and professors design and build six houses, which were on display at inns for visitors to vote on. The winning team of students, whose house was on display at The Barn Inn, won a $500 cash prize. After the event, the gingerbread houses were donated and on display at Akron Children’s Hospital.

The 2014 Christmas Cookie Tour will be held on Sunday and Monday, Dec. 7-8, and tickets will go on sale in October. Information will be available at online, on Facebook or by calling the Holmes County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau at 330-674-3975.
