New academic year, new course dates

As the University's internal training providers we aspire to offer you development opportunities that will not only help you in your current job role but will aid you in your personal and professional development.

To assist you in your development in 2011/12 new course dates have been added to the Learning and Development website.

Professional Services

Introduction to Procurement
This course will provide an overview of Procurement Services, introduce what Procurement is and what the University expects staff who are authorised to buy goods and services to consider when thinking 'I have a need'.

By the end of this course you will:

  • Understand Procurement Services structure and what they do.
  • Know what procurement means and why is it important.
  • Find out about the processes and systems used when buying goods / services.
  • Understand the principles of 'Good Procurement'.
  • Know who can help.
  • Be able to identify development needs.

Who is it for?
This session is for staff in Professional Services who deal with procurement.

Colleges

Cross Cultural Competency Training
This programme has been developed in conjunction with the Business School to support their staff in building their cross-cultural competence so that they can work more effectively in an increasingly internationalised environment.

This course gives you the opportunity to reflect on the cultural expectations you may have in your professional lives and what influence these may have on your interactions with people from other cultures. You will explore a number of areas of potential cross-cultural difference (including status and hierarchy, concepts of time, communication, approach to task and relationships, approach to teaching and learning) and think about what impact this may have on your work.

Who is it for?
This programme is for Academic and Professional Services staff in Colleges.

You manage others

Managing Staff Performance and Absence
This is a practical interactive session that uses case studies and discussion primarily.  It is designed to assist you with managing performance and disciplinary issues with your staff using the new University Procedures which were developed in 2009.

Who is it for?
This training session is designed for junior and middle managers in Professional Services who have responsibility for managing staff.

You teach

Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PCAP)

What is PCAP?
This accredited course, which has been shaped by feedback from participants and by broad consultation across the University, leads to your recognition as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. It is run for University staff, by academic colleagues in the Graduate School of Education, in conjunction with colleagues in Education Enhancement.

Who is the PCAP programme for?
The programme is aimed at Lecturers to enable them to gain fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA), as part of their probation. It is also strongly recommended for Teaching Fellows, and advised for other staff who have a role in the University which entails creating effective student learning.

Dates
Modules begin in October, 2011.
