Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood community news - 22 October 2020

Christchurch City Council

Greetings from your Community Board

Message from the Chair

Kia ora koutou,
There's a long weekend coming up and plenty of events to explore in your neighbourhood as part of the Christchurch Heritage Festival.
If you've ever wondered what happens to your rubbish, check out the EcoSort open day on Saturday 31 October. It's great to see such a strong turnout for our local Walk n Talk group, proving age is no barrier to getting out and having fun with friends.
If you haven't already, I encourage you to take a look at the changes the Council is proposing to its current Social Housing Strategy and give your feedback.
Keep being  kind and look after one another. Kia kaha.

Chair of the Community Board

Board Chair, David Cartwright

Highlights from our latest meeting

Our Community Board met on Monday 19 October. We granted funding for some community projects from our 2020-21 Youth Development Fund and approved a Give Way control on Gardiners Road on the left turn slip lane on its northern approach into Claridges Road.
We also received our Community Board Area Report for October 2020, which gives us an overview of all the great work that's going on in our Community Board area.
You can read the minutes to see what else we discussed and find out the dates, times and details of upcoming Community Board and Council meetings here.

 Walk n Talk turns 20!

One of the Christchurch City Council’s longest running recreation programmes turns 20 this year and shows no sign of slowing up.  The programme, which was established in 2000, aims to address the need for more walking groups in the city, especially for those just starting out or getting back into activity.
94 year old Pat Williams from the Fendalton Walk n Talk group (pictured above and below) has been a regular participant of the group since its inception, attending every week with her friend Dorothy. Many of the members say that being part of the group helps keeps them active and provides valuable social contact. There are now six programmes organised by the Council in different suburbs around the city with up to 30-50 people meeting in any one group on a weekly basis to walk. For more information or to find your local Walk n Talk, please contact us here.

Football tournament opportunity for local talent to shine

FC Twenty11 were proud to host the Canterbury Dragons Grade 13 Football Tournament at Avonhead Park from 29 September to 2 October 2020.  The football tournament, normally played in Queenstown, provided the opportunity for local teams and clubs to celebrate their winter season with a three day tournament showcasing both their skills and sportsmanship.
