Collaboration the key to the Future of Northern Australia

The existing strength and future potential of Northern Australia was celebrated last Friday when The Hon. Tony Abbott MP, Prime Minister of Australia launched the Northern Australia Alliance in Cairns.

The Alliance sees key advocacy bodies from Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia unite to work collaboratively and act as catalysts to help shape and change communities across Northern Australia in a strategic and consultative manner.

The Prime Minister witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Advance Cairns, Broome Future Ltd, and Northern Territory Chamber of Commerce, as each organisation committed to advancing and promoting the development of Northern Australia.

Advance Cairns hosted the event and Chair, Trent Twomey said, “The economic potential of Northern Australia is as vast as the area it covers and there are many exciting nation building projects such as Nullinga Dam, the Ord River Irrigation Scheme, investment in the Bruce, Hann and Savannah highways, further expansion of HMAS Cairns and Coonawarra, and greater funding for health and research at the Cairns and Darwin Hospitals.”

Advocacy Wins for Northern Australian Connections

Leading business organisations, Advance Cairns, Cairns Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Tropical North Queensland welcomed the recent visit to Cairns by The Hon. Tony Abbott MP, Prime Minister of Australia and the announcements he made regarding the region, whilst launching the Northern Australia Alliance.

“This kind of go ahead thinking, which characterises Northern Australia, is absolutely critical to the success of our nation as a whole. The development of Northern Australia is not just the task of people living in Darwin, Cairns, Townsville, Broome, Mackay and Rockhampton – it is a task for every single Australian, because the better Northern Australia goes the better the country will go,” said the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister went on to announce that the Northern Australia White Paper will be released in June and confirmed that, included in the White Paper, will be the upgrade of the Hahn Highway.

Not only does this announcement reinforce the recognition of the important role Northern Australia has in shaping the nation’s future, it also acknowledges the consistent and united advocacy from business groups in the region. Advance Cairns, Cairns Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Tropical North Queensland have been long-term advocates for the need to seal the remaining 90km of the Hann Highway.

The sealing of the Hahn Highway is one of the key 8 + 8 priorities outlined by Advance Cairns, Cairns Chamber of Commerce and TTNQ in 2014.

Northern Australia Insurance Premium Taskforce announced

At the same event, the Prime Minister also announced the establishment of a Northern Australia Insurance Premium Taskforce to be headed by former senior treasury official Mike Callaghan to tackle the disparity in the premiums paid by residences and businesses in this part of Australia.

In a joint media statement made between Advance Cairns, TTNQ and Cairns Chamber of Commerce CEO, Deb Hancock said, “We have been working for some time to find a solution to the soaring insurance costs experienced by consumers and businesses across Northern Queensland and are passionate about seeing premiums reduced. It is pleasing to see that the Prime Minister has established the Insurance Taskforce and we welcome their recommendation to address this long standing issue.”
