Education Resource Group is pleased to announce its partnership with nationally known reading expert Cris Tovani. ERG and Tovani have collaborated to create an innovative staff development service.
Tovani says, “If we truly want all students to pursue a rigorous course of study, then it’s up to us to show them how to access challenging text.” Supporting teachers in doing just that—helping students access challenging text—is at the heart of this service.
Hope Reagan, an ERG co-founder, adds, “We want to help teachers push student thinking to the next level; we want students to construct comprehension by merging reading, writing, and thinking…not just covering content.”
As with other ERG services, the process will be job-embedded. Here’s how it works:
• Specially trained Tovani coaches will share content based on a Tovani text selected by the school.
• Teachers participating in the project will receive copies of the Tovani text.
• ERG/Tovani coaches will model lessons using Tovani’s instructional methods and planning circle.
• Teachers will participate in job-embedded support sessions with the specially trained coaches.
• Cris Tovani will be available for web-based consultations. On-site visits with Tovani can also be scheduled.
Alice Oakley, ERG co-founder concludes, “ERG is thrilled to have the opportunity to work closely with Cris Tovani to support teachers and readers. Our newest service is a great way for ELA and content teachers in grades 6 – 12 to learn a variety of strategies to support deeper thinking and understanding among their readers.”
