Hello Everyone

It's September already and we have just two more Disability and Inclusion Workshops this year.  This is a great workshop and is geared toward those who may be new to the disability sector or those who need further information on disability awareness for their role. 

We do also have availability to come to your organisation to deliver training before the end of the year - more details are below. 

And finally, we wanted to share this article with you - “The Need for Roles and Relationships.” It gives a great frame of reference to ‘Social Role Valorisation’.

It highlights the importance of the “social role” in our lives and explains that, in order to live a full and enriched life, we all need to have these valued social roles. Without these valued roles we are depriving ourselves and the people we work with of the good things that life brings us.

Community Inclusion at Midway Community Care
Midway Community Care have had a long relationship with Inclusion WA’s Professional Development service, just recently engaging with us to deliver our flagship “Community Inclusion” workshop for their entire organisation. A notable moment in the workshop was getting participants to question and challenge society’s views on ‘inclusion’, and chat about how we are supporting someone to live a rich and fulfilled life through the work we do. WOW!

Uniting Care West Refresh their Professional Boundaries Skills and Knowledge
Uniting Care West had us delivering “Professional Boundaries for Human Service Workers” for their Northbridge staff recently, with so many people sharing their stories and opinions. Topics of interest that we discussed included: the difference between being ‘friendly’ and being ‘friends’.. and where to draw the line. Great bunch of people working there, hope to see you soon!

Disability and Inclusion - September

This is a workshop designed to introduce the fundamentals of inclusion whilst providing a background on what disabilities are and how we can work better to include people with disabilities.

Topics covered:

  • Disability awareness – including information on disability and relevant statistics
  • Exploring the political correctness minefield – strategies to overcome those uncomfortable “foot in mouth” situations
  • Strategies for comfortable and appropriate communication with people with disabilities
  • Uncovering prevalent community attitudes to disability
  • The inclusion spectrum – how to apply inclusion theory in the work you do, through adapting and modifying the activity or the environment for the person
Community Inclusion Workshop - October

This workshop relies on drawing parallels.  You will think about a good life in the context of community, drawing from your uniquely human experience to consider the way connections with others are made and enhanced. This same thinking will then be analysed based on what we know about the people we support.

This workshop will encourage you to think about your version of a fulfilling life, and relate that to what others may see as a rich life for themselves. The entire premise of this workshop is about exploring the richness of life and the ways we can support others to share in that richness.

Professional Boundaries for Support Workers - October

This workshop explores the nature of boundaries through interactive open discussion and reflective learning practices. Participants will explore existing boundaries between themselves in their support worker role, and the individuals they work for. We will then explore the necessary steps to prevent boundary violations.

This is a topic that asks participants to define what a good “working relationship” is, and how it differs from being a “friend” of the people we are paid to support.
