Research Update

Update: Unfortunately, we made an error in the previous version of this email. We attributed numbers to March when it should have been April. The corrected text is below.

Good afternoon,

Linked below is the Import-Export Report for April 2020.

Here are a few key findings:

  • Imports to the United States declined 22.7% for April 2020 compared to April 2019 and are down 4.5% year-to-date.
  • Imports from Mexico declined 28.5% during this period and are down 3.8% year-to-date.
  • The decline in Mexican imports is due to the Mexican government making it more difficult for Mexican breweries to brew during the COVID-19 pandemic. Beginning June 1, most breweries in Mexico were back in operation.
  • Imports from the Netherlands increased by 11.7% for April 2020 versus April 2019 and are now up 4.6% year to date.
  • Non-alcohol (NA) imports increased by 68.2% in April 2020 versus April 2019. So far, for 2020, NA imports are up 100.7% from the Netherlands for the year compared to this point in 2019, and Canadian NA imports are up 2,415.4% YTD versus 2019.

Please note that the numbers reflect updated information published by the Department of Commerce for 2017-2019.
