CEPA’s Role in Key EU Policies - Sustainability
Sustainability: the top value of the pest management service sector & ‘innovation for health’ path Sustainability and pest management service companies One aspect of sustainability refers to the use of chemicals that harm human health and the environment. With IPM, the need for the use of biocides (chemicals) is reduced to a minimum and in some cases not necessary altogether. Shared between many of the CEPA national association members, the sustainability provided by pest management is first of all, a matter of prevention: The British Pest Control Association (BPCA), a CEPA National Association member has explained this as follows: “Green pest control might range from a firm claiming to spray fewer [chemical substances known as ‘biocides’] to one that will use every possible alternative to chemicals including heating, freezing, and deep cleaning. ANECPLA’s Director General, Milagros Fernandez de Lezeta explains in a similar note: "There are many services that are being carried out today that do not imply the exclusive use of chemical products. [...] In fact, the professionals of the sector always tend, first of all, to control the biological cycle of the species and not to use chemical products if this is not strictly necessary. CEPA’s Role in Key EU Policies - Digital
Digital Developments & Pest Management: Why not Drones? The European Commission rightly points to the enormous growth potential represented by the digital transformation of EU business and society. CEPA is excited about its potential. Technology in the area of pest management is following swiftly with the testing of drones for the monitoring and early warning of pests. Smart Cities and pest monitoring drones have never crossed paths so far but we will ensure to present such innovations and connect our members and existing valuable, solution oriented EU platforms. Here is a snapshot of CEPA members’ drone development and application. CEPA’s Role in Key EU Policies - The Internet of Things
CEPA & the Internet of Things (IoT)Expected to exceed 1 trillion Euros by 2020[4], the Internet of Things (IoT) is behind what we call and know as ‘smart environments’. The physical and virtual worlds merge via the help of IoT. IoT is expected to revolutionise traditional industries. CEPA’s pest management service sector uses IoT abundantly. These include pest control devices that monitor and control pests intelligently via sensors that send data automatically to a cloud storage system. CEPA company members examples are numerous. For example, the use of infrared sensors in the devices can detect a pest and activate a trap or allow it to access bait. The devices can also send their activation data to the Rentokil cloud storage system, and automatically trigger alerts to company technicians via a dedicated wireless network or a GSM mobile network[5].
