New strategy for horse-riding in national parks

Horse-riding in national parks

National parks around the state have been working with local and community groups to establish a new strategy for horse-riding within parks. The new direction launched in early November identifies eight priority regions around the state for the establishment of new horse-riding opportunities.

Areas of focus include the far south coast, lower north coast, Southern Ranges and the Blue Mountains. It also includes provisions to trial horse-riding activities in five wilderness areas.

Rolled out over the next two to three years, regions will soon be arranging workshops with local horse-riders to identify the most appropriate approach.

More information on the strategy can be found at our corporate website.

Wander through the Solitary Islands Coastal Walk

Coffs Coast

Visitors to the Coffs Harbour area can now walk the 60km length of the Solitary Islands Coastal Walk from Sawtell to Red Rock as we have created linkages between existing tracks through signage and trackwork at significant headlands.

New signage linking the tracks up and down the Coffs coast feature stories about the local Aboriginal communities at locations such as Dammerels Head, Look-At-Me-Headland and Red Rock.

Crossing Coffs Coast Regional Park, Moonee Beach and Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve, the Solitary Island Coastal Walk can be tackled in the one hit with accommodation offered at many stops along the way, or in sections along the track.

National Park Trail launches on north coast

Tuckers Rocks, Bongil Bongil NP

Visitors touring up the north coast this summer can discover for themselves the new National Parks Trail. An initiative of the Legendary Pacific Coast, the new trail between Sydney and Brisbane, follows the Pacific Highway and stops at many of the legendary national parks along the way.

There are a range of national parks across The Legendary Pacific Coast waiting for you to discover and explore - whether you’d like to take a leisurely walk, hearty climb or take in cultural and heritage sites within amazing and ancient natural landscapes.

To follow the trail north (or south), you can download the free iPhone App, or visit the website, to start planning your north coast national park holiday.

“We looked up into high branches and saw koalas. We’ve never seen them in the wild before. Here, we saw five in 30 minutes, and the locals tell us about 200 live in the reserve and surrounding forests.”

Narrandera is fantastic place to spot Koalas. In 1972 Koalas were reintroduced to the Narrandera Nature Reserve. After 30 years the original twenty three Koalas have reproduced and spread into surrounding River Red Gum forests - making it home to more 200 healthy Koalas.

Is this the nature experience you're after? There are many more stories like this to be found in our Riverina, and we are trying to understand what park visitors need.

Rather than try and guess, we’d like your views to help us better plan for the future. Please help us by participating in this short 10 minute survey. The information collected will assist us to develop future products, services and improve current ones. Take the survey now.
