New Zealand School of Music - Dawn Chorus nzsm_header

Dawn Chorus

Welcome to the November edition of our events newsletter.

November is definitely ‘Douglas Lilburn Month’, as Monday 2 November marks what would have been his 100th birthday, and there are events throughout the month to honour the occasion.

This weekend, NZSM hosts the annual New Zealand Musicological Society Conference with the Lilburn-inspired theme 'Searches for Tradition'.

The Te Kōkī Trio and Jenny Wollerman present a concert of works written for/dedicated to Douglas Lilburn later in the month, and the Lilburn residence is having an open home this Sunday.

Chris Bourke discusses the place of local popular music in New Zealand in this year’s Lilburn Lecture, and Stroma presents ‘Nine Echoes’, a concert of composer-responses to Lilburn’s music.

See below for details of these events and plenty more…

New Zealand Musicological Society Conference
'Searches for Tradition'

Saturday 31 Oct - Sunday 1 Nov, NZSM Kelburn campus

Is there a discrete national musical tradition specific to New Zealand? This question was posed by Lilburn in 1946, and is the inspiration for the theme of this year’s New Zealand Musicological Society conference - ‘Searches for Tradition’.  The conference is hosted by Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music and takes place on the Kelburn campus.

Keynote Speakers:
Philip Bohlman, Distinguished Professor of the Humanities and of Music, University of Chicago
Peter Walls, Emeritus Professor, Victoria University of Wellington

Kristallnacht Memorial Concert
Tuesday 10 Nov, 7pm, Memorial Theatre

Kristallnacht, also referred to as the Night of Broken Glass, was a pogrom against Jews throughout Nazi Germany and Austria on 9–10 November 1938, carried out by SA paramilitary forces and non-Jewish civilians.

The name Kristallnacht comes from the shards of broken glass that littered the streets after Jewish-owned stores, buildings, and synagogues had their windows smashed.

In commemoration of this event, the Holocaust Centre of New Zealand in Wellington is holding a Kristallnacht Memorial Concert, with support from Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music.

$45 Public, $35 Friends of Holocaust Centre of New Zealand, $30 Students with valid ID. Tickets available here.
