Clear evidence for a link between pro-inflammatory diets and 27 chronic diseases. Here’s how you can eat better

It’s no secret that our diet can have a major impact on our health. The Conversation summarised a recently published umbrella review which explored how pro-inflammatory diets increase the risk of 27 chronic diseases and premature deaths. And as almost half of all Australians live with a chronic disease, it's important to look at ways in which we can reduce inflammation through our diet. Click here to read the article by The Conversation.

 

Australian guidelines for physical activity during pregnancy

Updated guidelines for physical activity during pregnancy were recently released, outlining additional, evidenced-based recommendations.

These guidelines provide information and advice for pregnant women about how much physical activity and exercise they should do each day, and about reducing the time they spend being inactive.

 

Gather + Grow

 

Health and Wellbeing Queensland (HWQld) have launched their new Gather + Grow program which is focused on improving remote food insecurity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in the Torres Strait, Cape York and Lower Gulf regions of Queensland.

The development of the Gather + Grow platform was  both community consulted and informed and brings together and showcases HWQld’s ongoing work in this space to identify priorities and lead actions that will improve access to healthy food and drinks.

 

World Food Safety Day 2021

World Food Safety Day is coming up on 7th June, as recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO). The campaign aims to draw attention and inspire action to help prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks, contributing to food security, human health, economic prosperity, agriculture, market access, tourism and sustainable development.  

Calls to action:

1. Ensure it’s safe - Government must ensure safe and nutritious food for all
2. Grow it safe - Agriculture and food producers need to adopt good practices
3. Keep it safe - Business operators must make sure food is safe
4. Know what's safe - Consumers need to learn about safe and healthy food
5. Team up for food safety - Work together for safe food and good health

 

Recipe Idea

Leek, Silverbeet + Feta Slice

Ingredients
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
2 leeks, halved lengthways, thinly sliced
1 bunch silverbeet, stems removed, leaves roughly shredded
100g feta, crumbled
50g parmesan, grated
1/2 cup self-raising flour
4 eggs
1/4 cup milk
1 garlic clove, crushed
1/4 cup parsley leaves, finely chopped
Cracked black pepper, to season 

Method
1. Preheat oven to 200°C. Line a baking dish with baking paper.
2. Heat half of the extra virgin olive oil in a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Cook the thinly sliced leek until tender. Transfer to a large bowl to cool slightly.
3. Heat the remaining extra virgin olive oil in the frying pan and cook the roughly shredded silverbeet until tender. Transfer to the bowl to cool slightly. 
4. Add the crumbled feta and grated parmesan to the bowl. Sift in the self-raising flour and mix until combined.
5. Whisk the eggs, milk and crushed garlic in a seperate bowl. Add to the prepared mixture and mix until combined. 
6. Stir in the finely chopped parsley leaves and season with cracked black pepper.
7. Spoon the mixture into the prepared baking dish and smooth surface. Bake for approx. 30 minutes or until golden and cooked through. Allow to cool slightly, then cut the slice into pieces. Enjoy!

The Boost your Healthy digital hub has been developed by Health and Wellbeing Queensland (HWQld) to provide support, inspiration and ideas to help Queenslanders stay healthy and active during COVID-19.

It also offers a platform for people to showcase how they are staying healthy through #BoostCampQld, and the Big Boost will feature a series of challenges to motivate and encourage people to stay healthy at this difficult time.

GOLD Cooking Workshops

NAQ Nutrition hosts cooking workshops as part of the Brisbane City Council's GOLD (Growing Older and Living Dangerously) program. The program is for people living in the Brisbane City Council area, aged 50 years and over, and cooking workshops are $5 per participant. Check out the following GOLD session coming up this month:

First Foods for Infants Nutrition Education Sessions

NAQ Nutrition hosts nutrition education sessions as part of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Healthy and Active program. These sessions are open to people living in the Moreton Bay Regional Council area. Check out the following session coming up this month:

This free casual information session will provide information for families and carers on feeding their infants, including first foods. Workshops will discuss the importance of infants and children experiencing food texture appropriate to their age and stage of development, which will assist a child’s speech development, oral health and motor skill development. Sessions will also include practical tips on how to make food for infants. 

 

Food Safety Supervisor Course

Our food safety supervisor courses include industry specific content and are designed with the needs of our students in mind. Our Food Safety Supervisor course:

  • Meets the requirements of nationally recognised training
  • Prepares food safety supervisors to supervise and oversee day to day operations and to prevent and recognise food safety hazards
  • Early years and aged care courses are specifically designed for those working with vulnerable populations

We provide opportunities for students to complete the course and all assessment in one day at a face-to-face training.
