Golden days and great escapes in NSW

Autumn is in full swing, and NSW is stepping into its golden glow as crisp mornings, softer light and cooler days make it the ideal time to explore the state’s coasts, countryside and everything in between. Start with a trip to Cronulla, part of the stunning Bate Bay that was recently named Australia’s Best Beach for 2026, and enjoy its relaxed mix of great eats, local favourites and seaside adventure. Look to the water once more as whale season begins along the NSW coast, or head inland for your next countryside getaway. And with a packed calendar of culture and outdoor events on the way, there is plenty to look forward to as autumn unfolds.

Eat, stay and play in Cronulla

In Cronulla, a 50-minute drive south of the city centre, you’ll feel like you’re a million miles away on a coastal retreat. This beachside suburb is renowned for its waterfront eateries and its relaxed vibe. With four kilometres of coastline and four beaches one after the other – Wanda, Elouera, North Cronulla and South Cronulla – this is the perfect place for a beachside holiday.

Where to see whales on the NSW coast

From May to November, thousands of whales migrate along the New South Wales coast from Antarctica to the South Pacific and back again. From Tweed Heads in the north to Eden in the south, you can observe the ‘Humpback Highway’ from lookouts on land (see the Wild About Whales website to find the best vantage points), or hop aboard a cruise to see these gentle giants up close.
