Express Advising

flyer for express advising

To help ensure that CCPS students have access to an advisor before the registration period, the CCPS-UAC will be holding two "Express Advising" days on Saturdays in March. These sessions do not require an appointment and will allow a student up to 15-minutes with an advisor to review program requirements and create a plan to use during the advanced registration period. These sessions are not designed to replace regular academic advising but can help students get the information they need before registration begins. MORE INFORMATION

Early Alert - Midterm Grade Contact

graph of midterm grades

On February 27th the staff of the CCPS Undergraduate Advising Center made contact with nearly 350 CCPS students who received a university midterm grade report. These reports are made available in myBanner to every student who has earned less than 25 college credits or is on academic review. Our contact is to prompt students to review their midterm grades, provide information about our advising services and workshops, inform them of policies and deadlines, and to provide general outreach for those students who may be struggling academically at this point in the semester. We provide this information to program Unit Heads and coordinators with program specific data as well as the college aggregate data for comparison.

Advisor Registration Holds

advisor hold process

Students who are on academic review (probation or jeopardy of dismissal) will have an advisor hold placed on their record preventing them from registering for the upcoming academic year during the March advanced registration period without approval.

In order for this hold to be removed CCPS undergraduate students must follow the process outlined to receive the signature of an academic advisor. This process is the ONLY way to have the hold lifted for CCPS students. Holds will not be lifted over the telephone or by email!

To avoid registration delays students should begin the process immediately and complete the process prior to their registration day in order to register on time. Students with this status have been provided with this information to their GVSU email account prior to spring break.  MORE INFORMATION

School of Social Work Pre-Candidacy Review

word doodle for SW

The CCPS Undergraduate Advising Center recently completed our annual School of Social Work Pre-Candidacy Review process. We undertake this process in order to assist students with appropriate registration planning during the advanced registration process. This information can then also be used by the department for planning purposes for the next year.

We review all SSW majors (declared) who have 45 or more credits to help them know if they should be registering for SW courses in the fall and making application for candidacy or if they have requirements remaining they need to complete first. We reviewed 157 student records this year, compared to 138 last year.

We sent messages to the students regarding their status which provides specific information regarding any missing requirements they may have.We put students into one of three categories based on where they are with their progress as follows (# of students):

(51) Likely - It appears that all of the candidacy requirements will be satisfied after Winter 2014 semester. MORE INFORMATION

 (95) Maybe - It appears there are a few missing requirements for admission to the School of Social Work in the upcoming fall semester. It’s possible to complete these requirements before Fall 2014 with appropriate academic planning. MORE INFORMATION

(11) Not Yet - it appears that there are more missing requirements than can be completed prior to Fall 2014. MORE INFORMATION

GVSU Police Academy Reviews

academy patch

The CCPS-UAC also recently completed academic record reviews for the 28 GVSU student applicants to the 2014 GVSU Police Training Academy as part of the admission review process. This review ensures that students are meeting MCOLES academic criteria for admission to the police academy.

The Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) and Grand Valley State University requires applicants to meet one of the following academic criteria in order to be eligible for consideration:

1. Possess either an Associates or a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university.

-or-

2. Be a registered student at GVSU and be eligible for graduation upon completion of the police academy.

The CCPS-UAC prepares certification letters to be provided to the student and MCOLES regarding academic eligibility for the training program which assists academy staff with ensuring that students are fully aware of the academic criteria necessary for admission.
