An evening with Noam Chomsky
Deakin played host to world-renowned linguist, analytical philosopher and activist Professor Noam Chomsky in his only public appearance on his recent visit to Melbourne, on 4 November. The Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre’s Plenary arena set the scene for an enlightening, and at times confronting, evening.
A guest of Deakin’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor Chomsky presented a lecture on 'Changing Contours of Global Order', a look at our dramatically changing world and the implications for world order.

Showcasing the retail leaders of today and tomorrow
Australia’s retail sector is a major contributor to the nation’s economic health. It is a $240 billion industry, creating over 1.2 million employment opportunities. Each successful retailer benefits an entire supply chain including farmers, manufacturers, suppliers, the local workforce and consumers.
Peak retail industry body the Australian Retailers Association recognised different areas of the sector in the ARA Australian Retail Awards, including Sherryl Munday of HSN Management Pty Ltd as 2011 Deakin University Australian Retail Graduate of the Year.

Moving back home great for boomerang kids, but what about the rest of the family?
For the ‘boomerang generation’, moving back home is often a positive experience, but what impact does this have on the rest of the family?
Previous research by Deakin University PhD student Elyse Warner revealed that moving back home with mum and dad was not seen as a negative step by ‘boomerang kids’ - young adults who, after living independently, had returned to live with their parents. She is now extending her study to investigate the impact on family members as well.
