Old Treasury Building   Golden oldie: Old Treasury Building celebrates 150 years

Melbourne’s Old Treasury Building has marked its 150th anniversary with a new exhibition and the launch of a biography on architect JJ Clark, who was all of 19 years old when he designed the building.

One of the nation’s finest examples of Renaissance Revival architecture, the building was second only to Parliament House as the centre of state affairs in Victoria.

JJ (John James) Clark went on to work on other Melbourne landmarks including the City Baths, Customs House (now the Immigration Museum), the Royal Mint and Government House.

The biography, JJ Clark: Architect of the Australian Renaissance by Dr Andrew Dodd, is the first to document his remarkable life and work.

The exhibition Gold and Governors: 150 years of the Old Treasury Building is on display at 20 Spring Street, Melbourne until 30 November 2012. Entry is free.

The birthday celebrations may be over, but the gifts keep coming for the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), with the announcement that it was Australia’s most visited gallery – and the 25th most visited in the world in 2011 – according to The Art Newspaper’s annual survey.

In a milestone year for the NGV it celebrated its 150th anniversary, opened new spaces for children and for contemporary art, announced new acquisitions, hosted an array of special exhibitions and regained its status as the nation’s most popular gallery.

The NGV’s attendance figure of 1,547,495, put it ahead of leading international galleries such as Tate Britain in London, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Congratulations also to Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) which featured on the Art Museum attendance list, with 895,410 visitors, making it the 63rd most attended in the world.
