Online Payroll Deduction for "Supporting Our Students" Campaign Now Available

Whether you’re just thinking about getting on board or already give to Supporting Our Students, thanks to a team of volunteers, it’s now even easier to participate.

Online payroll deduction is now available for those who want to give to the annual SOS campaign, all thanks to the diligent work of Jaime Chinn, Darin McGee and Rahim Kanjiyani. The trio of volunteers donated their time on evenings and weekends to complete the online payroll deduction project.

Now, to give to SOS, all you have to do is log in to the Bridge, click the Employee tab, click Supporting Our Students and follow the instructions. Or, just click here

Spring Convocation Overview -- May 31 - June 1

The 2012 Spring Convocation ceremonies take place Thursday, May 31 and Friday, June 1 in the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness. 

Approximately 1,500 people are eligible to graduate. 

Ceremonies are free and open to the public, starting at 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. each day.  A complete checklist for grads and families is available at this website.

Convocation ceremonies will be streamed online. This web link will be live about 10 minutes prior to the start of each ceremony.

The University will award four Honorary Degrees over the course of two days (one per ceremony). Learn who they are, here.

Volunteers are needed for a few positions both Thursday and Friday. Please call Sheena Olson at ext 2482 to learn more about volunteering at Convocation.

President's Award for Service Excellence Recipients Announced

The President’s Award for Service Excellence recognizes exceptional service to the University of Lethbridge and members of the University community.

The Award is given to two individuals: one AUPE staff member and one APO/Exempt Support Staff member.

This year, employees Linda Sebastian and Kathy Schrage received the award for AUPE and APO, respectively. Read more here.

Chancellor Dr. Shirley McClellan will host the annual Chancellor's Dinner on Thursday, May 31 to celebrate Spring Convocation.

David Hay 2012 Distinguished Teaching Award Recipient

When Dr. David Hay discovered he could actually study knights and castles in school, he never wanted to leave the educational environment. It’s good fortune for the University of Lethbridge that he still hasn’t.

The winner of the 2012 Distinguished Teaching Award says he’s always had a love of history, and it’s his great fortune that he’s been able to turn it into a rewarding career.

“As teachers, we should never forget just how lucky we are to be able to make our living helping people learn,” says Hay, who came to the University in 2000, his first professorship after earning his PhD from the University of Toronto. Read more here

Rasmussen's Research Contributions Earn Ingrid Speaker Medal

Professor of biological sciences Dr. Joseph Rasmussen has made outstanding contributions in fisheries and aquatic biology for three decades.

For his distinguished record of achievement and enduring contributions to these areas of study, the University of Lethbridge has named Rasmussen as the recipient of the 2012 Ingrid Speaker Medal for Distinguished Research, Scholarship, or Performance.

A Tier 1 Canada Research Chair, Rasmussen is the director of the University of Lethbridge’s Water Institute for Sustainable Environments (WISE). Read more here

Lance Grigg Appointed 2012 Board of Governors Teaching Chair

For his continued dedication to the scholarship and practice of teaching, the University of Lethbridge is proud to appoint Lance Grigg as a Board of Governors Teaching Chair.

An outstanding teacher and scholar, Grigg has consistently demonstrated clear thinking and enthusiasm for the ongoing improvement of teaching and learning at the University of Lethbridge.

A professor in the Faculty of Education, Grigg’s primary areas of instruction are critical inquiry in social studies education and philosophy of education.

His teaching and research interests include: critical thinking across the curriculum, the philosophy of insight, chess in the classroom and religious education.  Read more here.

Summer Painting Schedule

The painting team will be making their way around campus this summer with a more action-packed schedule than ever before.  

This month, the SU Building, Anderson Hall and Turcotte Hall get spruced up. To find out where they are headed next, please click here.

Products used in this project are environmentally friendly and safe for workers and those occupying adjacent spaces.

The paint products contain no or low (VOC's) Volatile Organic Compound. There may be a faint odour from time to time and those with a high sensitivity to products of this nature should be aware.

U of L Researchers Host National Conference in Theoretical Physics - June 7-9

The Theoretical Physics Group of the Department of Physics and Astronomy will host Theory Canada 7, a national conference in theoretical physics from June 7 to 9.

About 60 participants will come from all over Canada and beyond. 

The banquet speaker will be Sheilla Jones, journalist and author of The Quantum Ten. Learn more about this activity, here.

2012 Alberta Summer Games Volunteers Needed

The organizers of the 2012 Alberta Summer Games are seeking assistance to recruit volunteers.

In order for the Games to reach its full complement of volunteers, they are looking for 1,900 people to help out in various capacities – and for varying time commitments prior to, and during, the Games, which run from July 26 – 29 at numerous sites in Lethbridge and region.

Bursaries Offered by Canadian Blood Services

Canadian Blood Services is offering bursaries to students in grades 11, 12 as well as at the post-secondary level who are able to recruit a minimum of 20 blood donors.

The awards are worth $1,500 and $1,000 and will be disbursed in Fall 2012. Learn more about this opportunity, here.
