Rauch to support vice chancellor for finance and operationsSara Rauch started a new assignment today as assistant to Vice Chancellor for Finance and Operations Lynn Valenter. She will retain many of her current fiscal specialist duties during a transition period. WSU Vancouver will rely on her experience with payroll and grants during the transition to Workday. Rauch came to WSU Vancouver as a fiscal technician II in 2016 and was promoted to fiscal specialist II a year later. She is a WSU Vancouver alumna, with a degree in business accounting and finance. Prior to working for WSU Vancouver, Rauch was responsible for accounts payable and estimating at two construction/trade firms. Student Affairs and Enrollment staffs Career CenterCynthia Johnston has joined Student Affairs an Enrollment as the lead career counselor. Through career development classes, workshops and individual appointments, Johnston will work with students to prepare them for their future careers. She will also be the primary coordinator for the semiannual Career and Internship Fair. Johnston previously worked as an advisor for the Carson College of Business, and in the student employment and career offices at Seattle Pacific University. She brings a wealth of experience to her new role and will be a great support to students. . Fire marshal inspection begins todayThe annual fire marshal inspection takes place today through Thursday, June 4. Every space on campus will be inspected including lab spaces. Help the Cougar Food Pantry collect much-needed itemsThe Cougar Food Pantry is running low on many items we can purchase only in limited quantities. You can help by donating food between 9 and 11 a.m. or 4 and 6 p.m. June 8 – 11 at the Physical Plant (mail room) loading dock. Watch for signage leading to the loading dock. VanCougs are most in need of: canned chicken, canned fruit, canned vegetables (especially green beans and carrots), ready-to-eat soup, pasta, rice, quinoa and cereal. Summer is a great time for a BaCE workshopAs many know, Building a Community of Equity Professional Development program (BaCE) is a 12-hour cultural competency, responsiveness, enrichment and professional development program designed for staff, faculty and administrators to become advocates and change agents of equity, diversity and inclusion throughout the fabric of WSU Vancouver. Since fall 2018, more than half of WSU Vancouver employees have participated in the program. The BaCE program represents an important component of the efforts to build equity, diversity and inclusion infrastructure for WSU Vancouver and the WSU system at large. Summer is a great time to take a BaCE workshop, and make progress toward earning your BaCE certificate. Attend the SEEC virtual Social HourThe Support and Empowerment for Employees of Color Association (SEEC) is holding a virtual Social Hour from noon – 1 p.m. Friday June 12, July 10 and 24, and Aug. 7. Contact Obie Ford III for Zoom information. The event is a virtual holding space for faculty, staff and students who identify as People of Color. It is also open to advocates for equity, diversity and inclusion. This is a space of community and support where you can show up, connect, interact, decompress and just be. WSU Vancouver receives donated face coveringsEntrepreneur and WSU alumnus Ryan Moor, donated 500 face coverings to WSU Vancouver faculty and staff. Moor is the founder and Chief Vision Officer for Ryonet and Allmade Apparel, two manufacturing and supply companies that rapidly pivoted production to make high-quality, reusable face coverings in the wake of COVID-19. Called the Allmask, the fitted face coverings are made from soft, eco-friendly material. Some of the masks are already hard at work protecting employees in Facilities Operations and the College of Education. Thank you, Moor, for being a generous member of the Cougar Nation. The census is easy (10 minutes to answer 10 questions), secure and important. The number of residents in states determines Congressional representation. Way to GoCollege Hill Custom Threads supported WSU Student Emergency Funds by creating a branded T-shirt for each of the six campuses and donating proceeds from sales back to each campus. WSU Vancouver raised $1,250—second only to WSU Pullman, which raised $2,000. WSU Vancouver alumnus Eric Dexter; Professor in the College of Arts and Sciences, and Director of the Meyer's Point Field Station Stephen Bollens; Jeffery Cordell; and Associate Professor in the college of Arts and Science Gretchen Rollwagen-Bollens have co-authored “Zooplankton invasion on a grand scale: insights from a 20-yr. time series across 38 Northeast Pacific estuaries,” published in ECOSHPERE in May. The article is important for both its unusually long time scale and the 2,500 km of geography it covers. Michelle Audie, master’s student in the School of the Environment and Kelsey King, Ph.D. student in the School of Biological Sciences, have been awarded fellowships from the NW Climate Adaption Science Center. The NW CASC’s Research Fellowship Program enables graduate students and postdocs from a variety of scientific backgrounds to co-produce actionable science in collaboration with regional natural resource managers and decision-makers. Cassandra Doll, master’s student in the School of Biological Sciences, was awarded a fellowship with the USFWS Directorate Fellows Program. The program provides hands-on training and experience to advance conservation priorities with USFWS Rebekah Gaxiola, a Ph.D. student in the School of Biological Sciences, was awarded an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship (GRFP). As one of the most prestigious graduate awards in science, the program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported STEM disciplines who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees at accredited U.S. institutions. The GRFP has a long history of selecting recipients who achieve high levels of success in their future academic and professional careers. Navajyoth Manjeri Puthiyaveettil, a Ph.D. in the School of the Environment, will be part of a cohort in the PNNL-WSU Distinguished Graduate Research Program. The DGRP offers a unique opportunity to tackle scientific challenges alongside some of the nation’s leading energy, environment and national security researchers. Dylan Quinn, Ph.D. student in the School of the Environment, was awarded a Graduate Research Innovation fellowship through the Joint Fire Sciences Program. GRIN is a partnership among six federal agencies to address problems associated with managing wildland fires and fire-impacted ecosystems. The award provides an opportunity for students to enhance their understanding of how science can be used to inform fire-related policy.
