Life in the Park October 2018 No Images? Click here Your local neighbourhood now has a dedicated Place LeaderThis month we welcome the Town's newest team - Place Planning. Each of the Town's distinct neighbourhoods - Burswood Peninsula, Lathlain, Carlisle and Welshpool, East Victoria Park and St James, Curtin University and Bentley, and Victoria Park - have a newly appointed Place Leader, who will lead coordination on significant future activities in each area. The six Place Leaders (pictured above) have expertise in strategic planning, place management, urban design, landscape architecture, economic development and transport planning. They will work closely with the existing range of disciplines at the Town of Victoria Park as well as residents and business members to make sure major planning activities are coordinated and tailored to best meet the specific needs of each distinctive neighbourhood that makes up the Town. For a quick explanation on what we aim to do in this space, watch the video below featuring the Town's Place Planning Manager David Doy, who recently presented at the inaugural Town Team Movement conference in Perth. Caterpillars on the marchThe white cedar caterpillar is a brown-black hairy caterpillar with a faint yellow body stripe that can be found within the Town during the warmer months from October through to April. The caterpillar is predominantly a nuisance pest, and may cause skin reactions on susceptible people who come into contact with the caterpillar’s hairs. Once caterpillars grow large enough to leave the safety of the tree to find shady hiding spots, new trees to feed on and places to pupate, this can result in hundreds of caterpillars swarming into people’s homes. If you live near a cape lilac, also known as chinaberry or white cedar; or have past history of white cedar caterpillar activity on your property there are a number of control measures that can be taken to help manage caterpillar numbers.
The Town cannot assist with cape lilac trees and caterpillar issues on private properties, as it is considered a civil matter.
