Editor's note

As I mentioned last week, The Conversation is approaching its fifth birthday in the UK, and since 2013 we have grown significantly. We now have more than 20 editors generating content with thousands of academic authors.

When I explain that we are a not-for-profit organisation, committed to increasing the quality of content and debate available to the public, I’m often asked, “How do you pay for those editors – what is the business model?”

It is, of course, a perfectly reasonable question. And fortunately, since launch, we have had superb people answering it for us. The Conversation maintains a strict separation between editorial and commercial operations. So, while I work with the rest of the editorial team producing independent journalism, we have a Chief Executive, who leads on fundraising, operational matters and running a membership model that sees universities support our work.

Today, I am delighted to announce that the next Chief Executive of The Conversation Trust (UK) will be Chris Waiting, who has previously held senior management positions at the BBC and the Associated Press. Chris will build on the great work done by his predecessor Max Landry in establishing The Conversation. We look forward to welcoming Chris to the organisation.
