Highlight: 2015 Rhode Island Business Plan Competition


Applications are now being accepted to the 2015 Rhode Island Business Plan Competition, which expects to award prizes valued at $200,000. The Competition, free and open to everyone age 18 or over, whether or not they already have started a business, has two tracks: an Entrepreneur Track is available to anyone, and a Student Track is optionally available for those enrolled in college or graduate school.

To prepare for this competition, the Rhode Island Business Plan Competition will host free workshops aimed at helping emerging and aspiring entrepreneurs learn what it takes to build a business.

The online application may be completed at any time until 5:00 PM on March 30, 2015; visit the group's website for details.

Call for Abstracts: New England Science Symposium
The New England Science Symposium (NESS), established in 2002, provides a forum for postdoctoral fellows; medical, dental and graduate students; post-baccalaureates; college and community college students (particularly for African-American, Hispanic/Latino and American Indian/Alaska Native individuals) to share their biomedical and health-related research activities through oral or poster presentations, to engage in discussions related to career development  in the sciences, to exchange ideas and to expand their professional networks. Tips on Grantsmanship from NYAS
On October 9, 2014, the New York Academy of Science's Science Alliance presented a seminar on best practices for grant writing and fellowship applications. The presentation, entitled 'Grantsmanship for Graduate Students and Postdocs,' featured a talk by Jaime S. Rubin, director for research development in the Department of Medicine at Columbia University, and a panel of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who have successfully applied for several types of funding. Postdoc Opportunity

Postdoctoral Position in Structural Bioinformatics - NIH - Bethesda, MD

The Structural Bioinformatics Core Section (SBIS) at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Vaccine Research Center (VRC), is opening a postdoctoral position in the areas of computational biology and structural bioinformatics. They seek a creative, self-motivated individual who can apply computational tools to challenging problems associated with the design of vaccines in a fast-paced and highly collaborative research environment. The individual will work closely with an SBIS mentor to collaborate with experimental sections in the center and to develop novel methods for computational vaccine design.

Desired attributes include a PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, or a closely related field; proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages: C, C++, or Fortran; proficiency in either Python or Perl; and prior experience in select computational areas. Assistant Professor - Genomic Medicine - MD Anderson Cancer Center - Houston, TX

The Assistant Professor is responsible for providing expertise in the design, conduct, and analysis of clinical and laboratory research projects.  He/she independently designs and executes the aims of a broad range of biomedical research projects in cancer biology, and is responsible for preparing manuscripts for peer review, presenting research results at national and international meetings, and also preparing grant applications to support research.

Applicants must hold a PhD in a basic science-related field, such as molecular biology, genetics, pathology, or other related area.  The position requires a highly-motivated and independent candidate who will establish collaborative interactions with clinicians and translational researchers developing new cancer therapies. Candidates also should be prepared to carry out education and mentoring activities with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
