A team of doctors at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg have, in a groundbreaking procedure, performed a liver transplant from an HIV-positive donor to an HIV- negative recipient. This operation is a first of its kind. Harriet Etherredge, Jean Botha and June Fabian set out the major obstacles they had to overcome - including answering big ethical questions - before the operation could take place.

From 2020 Swahili will be added as an optional language in South Africa’s schools. Peter Mose argues that adding the East African language to the curriculum will prepare South African pupils for engaging and trading with the rest of the continent.
