Newsletter 10 - July 3, 2020

From The Principal

We have been incredibly lucky to have our school open for all of Term 2. Thank you to students, parents and teachers for working together and showing adaptability, resilience and care throughout this time. The implications of COVID-19 has meant adjustments, increasing student independence and an ability to refocus on what is important. Many have commented that they have enjoyed reduced scheduled commitments and the opportunity to spend more time with close family, and enjoying active outdoor activities like playing in parks, walking and cycling.

We encourage our children to be healthy and active and this was evident with the high level of participation in the Year 4-6 Cross Country held this week. During break times, we encourage our children to enjoy outdoor play in our nature playgrounds and there are many health benefits from being outdoors and in nature. If you are looking for things to do on the holidays, Nature Play WA has some great ideas.
Enjoy the winter break!

School resumes on Tuesday 21 July.

Week 10 Virtual Assembly

Click HERE (password: subiaco) to watch our assembly screened to classes, and the something extra this week was a workout with Mr Clancy and Mr Longhurst. You have to see it to believe it!

Staffing Changes

For the second semester, Andrew Longhurst has taken up a full time role as Chaplain, with his time split between Como Primary for 2 days a week and Shenton College for 3 days a week. Our loss is Shenton’s gain and we are thrilled that Andrew can help support our Subi students at Shenton. Claire McCaul will be teaching the Year 1 and 2 Digital Technologies and Kristy Wakefield will support Ash Clancy on Wednesdays with Physical Education.

Student Representative Council

The Student Representative Council (SRC) is a selected group of Year 4-6 students representing the viewpoints of all students in Subiaco Primary. The role of SRC members is to promote the views of students and to encourage students to become actively involved in our school. The SRC generated great interest with 39 Year 4, 29 Year 5 and 15 Year 6 students, totaling 83 students, completing an SRC Expression of Interest Form. There were 12 Year 4, 12 Year 5 students and 15 Year 6 students shortlisted, and they prepared and delivered a two minute speech to their peers this week. The year level peers then voted for their year level representatives and the preferential voting system determined the successful candidates.

Every one of the finalists should be proud of their efforts, their passion, and the deep commitment to our school was palpable. Click HERE to read the Year 4-6 finalist inspirational ideas and suggestions to make our school the very best it can be. These suggestions will be presented to the incoming SRC to discuss and decide what ideas can become reality.

I would like to genuinely thank all the students who took the time to take part in the process by indicating their interest, and I now encourage them to offer their views and opinions on enriching school life through the year level representatives once the SRC is up and running.

Thank you to our outgoing SRC and I am really looking forward to working alongside and together with our new SRC. Introducing our representatives:

Year 4 - Charlie Mengler, Griffin Murray, Violet Reed, George Ryan
Year 5 - Tristan Alger, Oliver James, Stella Schaffert, Matilda Allen
Year 6 - Lydia Parker, Lillian Tyter, Natalia Sprogoe, Zara Bannan, Juliette Bird, Sophie Pearson

Cross Country 2020

It was such a joy watching the sea of red faces cross the finishing line at the Cross Country event. This year’s races had everything from stumbles at the start line to organised drink stops between the runners, friends running extra to help friends finish, and close finishes.

The students have been putting in a mountain of work leading up to the big race and it really showed in their performances. The Year 4 students’ course was 2000m in length, while our Year 5 & 6 students’ course was 2500m. The top 5 Girls & Boys runners from each year group have the opportunity to represent the school at the Interschool Cross Country on Thursday 13 August. This event can lead to state and national selection.

It was great seeing all the parents and family members on the school oval supporting our runners. Congratulations and thanks to all our competitors and teachers on their efforts.

Care Bags

For the second year in a row, students at Subiaco Primary School have participated in Care Bags, a state wide initiative providing support to children going into foster care for the first time.

This term, the school held a Silver Coin Challenge. The challenge involved each class filling a jar with as many silver coins as they could and the winning class receiving handmade pizzas.

Through the Silver Coin Challenge, the school was able to raise $1,500 for the Care Bags program. We were then able to buy supplies for the bags and the Social Justice Group helped pack them. The backpacks are filled with two sets of clothes, socks and underwear, pyjamas, toiletries, and a toy. This year we were able to make over 25 bags which were then given to the Department of Child Protection who distribute them to children going in foster care.

An additional $1,500 was raised through the coin collection and this money will be donated to the Centre for Asylum Seekers, Refugees and Detainees (CARAD) on behalf of the school.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Genevieve Leong U5, Sean Yang U6, and Helen and Maisie McCaul for their wonderful piano performances at Mueller Park as part of the City of Subiaco’s Moments of Joy Piano Performance.

Student Reports & Requests for Interviews

The first semester reports were uploaded to Compass on Tuesday. The Department of Education did not require schools to include A to E grades on this year’s Semester 1 student reports.

Please take the opportunity to make an appointment with the class teacher to discuss your child’s progress or to clarify information provided, should you wish to do so. Alternatively, class teachers may have requested an interview on the report itself. To request an interview, simply email the teacher to make a mutually convenient time. Email addresses can be found at subiacops.wa.edu.au/school/our-staff/ (Click on any names in blue and their email address will open in whatever email program you are using, or right click on the link and copy the email address).

Office Refurbishment

In addition to the lower block carpeting and painting we undertook refurbishment of the front office.

Click HERE for before and after photos.

Compass Additional Features

You may have noticed we have added some additional features on Compass. These include School Reports (which you would have already seen), a School Community Calendar, and School Documentation.

The School Community Calendar will be updated regularly with events happening around our school. A daily schedule which includes these events will show on the home screen of your child. The calendar can also be viewed by clicking on the calendar icon at the top of the screen on a web browser.

School Documentation includes information such as curriculum letters, iPad app lists, school policies, information booklets, and links to the school newsletters and website. School Documentation is located under the star or people icon at the top of the screen on a web browser.

To view a graphic on how to navigate to these features on Compass click HERE.

Subiaco Primary School Choir

It has been a very different term without much singing but I’m glad to say that our choir is now back and rehearsing every TUESDAY morning at 8.00am in the music room. If your child has not been able to return to choir this term it would be great to welcome them back in Term 3.

Our Massed Choir Festival concert has been cancelled for 2020 but we will be participating in a Sing Day to be held in November. This will provide our choir with an opportunity to perform some of the songs planned for the Massed Choir Festival. The Sing Day will take place outside the Perth Concert Hall (outdoors on the St Georges Terrace side of the hall). I will confirm the date and time but the allocated performance days are 18 and 19 November.

Curriculum

Kindy Pyjama & Pizza Party
Kindy is always fun but it’s particularly exciting when you can wear your pyjamas and participate in a popping popcorn and pizza party. The children loved picking parsley from their vegetable garden and popped it on their homemade pizzas which were particularly tasty. Oh yes, we also talked about the sound ‘p’, made by the letter P. We wish all our Kindy families a happy and safe holiday! Click HERE for photos.

PP-Year 6 Minfulness Incursion
All Pre-primary to Year 6 students were engaged in a mindfulness incursion last week which was generously paid for by our P&C.

Year 2 SMILE Incursion
The Year 2 students enjoyed a mindfulness session with Shaun Kay from SMILE. They practised relaxing breathing techniques to help them during times of stress. The students listened as Shaun read his book and then had the opportunity to enact the different animal characters - Bruce the Shark, Leo the Lion, Sizzle the Snake, Ozzie the Eagle and Ellie the Elephant! This incursion helped the students learn how to take control of their physical and mental health, so that they can be the greatest version of themselves!

Year 4 Mindfulness Incursion
The Year 4 students enjoyed a mindfulness incursion with Shaun last week. Students learnt about resilience and how to control their emotions when they get upset. They also learnt about different breathing techniques they can use to help them relax. Shaun discussed an Emotion Scale. Some students selected an emotion and created a colour matched slide to explain the emotion and include their experiences and perspectives. Click HERE to see some slide creations and photos.

Year 6 Mindfulness
Shaun from SMILE Teachers visited the Year 6 students last week to remind them about the importance of mindfulness. He got the students breathing properly, and made them aware of how their breathing changes after vigorous activity. They identified a range of emotions, both negative and positive, and ranked them on a scale. Shaun explained some tips and techniques for turning negative energy into positive energy. Shaun is always an engaging and motivating presenter, and the students were all very involved and in tune with his message. U8 are especially lucky, because we have Joy in our class every day! Click HERE for photos.

Year 6 Bob Hawke College Visit
Last week Adrian Lee from Bob Hawke College came to speak to the Year 6 students about their move to high school next year. He provided lots of helpful information about the enrolment process, and the various courses and specialist clubs offered. He strongly encouraged everyone to make sure they were enrolled before the end of the first week of next term, regardless of which high school they choose. Ex-students, Deepak and Amelie, came along to represent the student point-of-view, and answer the many questions raised by the students. Our students were a very attentive and appreciative audience.
