The hip-hop musical about America's Founding Fathers
|
Did you manage to get a coveted ticket to Hamilton, the hip-hop musical? The award-winning show about America’s Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the Caribbean who became George Washington's right-hand man, starts its run in Toronto next week. Today in The Conversation Canada, Jason Opal, a history professor at McGill University who teaches students about the early United States, the American Revolution and the history of slavery, dives into the play’s historical facts. He says the play accurately characterizes Hamilton’s raw ambition, “brilliantly captures the boundless energy of its main character,” and
“powerfully argues, in theatrical form, for a more inclusive America.”
One of Hamilton’s legacies was to found the U.S. Treasury—it’s one of the reasons he’s on the U.S. $10 bill. Wonder what Hamilton would think about a Bank of Canada proposal to create a federally managed digital currency—an issue explored in one of our stories today written by McMaster PhD student Anwar Mohammed.

Eugene Beaulieu, professor of economics from the University of Calgary, looks at the possibilities for post-Brexit trade deals. Given the protectionist stance of the U.S. today, Beaulieu says the U.K. should start their negotiations with Canada.
Marco Laverdière, lecturer, and research associate in health law and policy at the Université de Sherbrooke explores the idea of a Canadian national licence to practice medicine. From a legal perspective, he asks if licensed doctors in Ontario could be allowed to practise in Québec—without going through the paperwork—to help alleviate practitioner shortages.
