Artswork: South East Bridge enews
February 2017

Editorial

Welcome to the latest edition of the South East Bridge enews

This month, we take a look at some of the new and exciting programmes that Artswork is investing in, including the Inspire, Create, Exchange programme, which looks at ways to improve mental health for children and young people in Hampshire. Earlier this month, we paid a visit to the Tate Modern to explore the fantastic 'Department for Doing Nothing', a project working with young people from Southampton to re-engage them with education and learning through arts and culture. Inspired by the Mass Observation Archive report on Juvenile Delinquency from 1949, 'the Department' explored different definitions of 'nothing', to illustrate that behind such a term can lie a variety of engaging activities. The exhibition was very successful, and currently holds the record for the most visitors to the Southwark Room since it opened last year. We are incredibly pleased to have been a part of this work. As one young person on the project said: "I thought galleries were boring places with paintings on the wall but this was nothing like that. I'd go again." Knowing we are engaging with young people in a positive way through programmes we invest in is a great reward for all that we strive for as an organisation.

With a wealth of free resources at your fingertips via the Artswork website, all you need to do is register for unlimited access. If you tick the box to register as an ENYAN member as part of this, you will also receive discounts rates on a selection of our Artsplan professional development courses.

Until next month,

Artswork co-invests in Inspire // Create // Exchange programme for better mental health through arts & cultural practice

Artswork has co-invested in the ICE Programme that is being developed and led by Hampshire Cultural Trust’s Better Life Chances team and Hampshire Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service.

ICE: Inspire // Create // Exchange aims to address and explore important mental health issues with young people using high-quality arts and culture; to measure impact, share positive outcomes and in doing so seek to influence organisational change. For each phase or project group there will be an inspiration point, a participation phase and showcasing opportunities. There will be core target groups of young people directly engaged in project work, specifically the ‘Inspire’ and ‘Create’ stages, with artists and cultural practitioners, as well as a wider group of young people across Hampshire who will be reached and affected by the messages and artwork shared through the ‘Exchange’ phase.

Doing Nothing at Tate Exchange

“What have you been up to?”

“Oh you know, nothing much.”

We’ve all probably responded to the above question in a similar way at some point in our lives. As it turns out, ‘doing nothing’ is pretty much impossible – something the founders of the Department for Doing Nothing wanted to make very clear to all who entered their makeshift office space earlier this month. Taking inspiration from the Mass Observation Archive report on Juvenile Delinquency from 1949, the Department for Doing Nothing opened its doors to the public at Switch House, Tate Modern on Southbank on the 6th & 7th of February.

Led by the John Hansard Gallery, Southampton Youth Offending Service, Compass School and In-Focus Training, the Department for Doing Nothing is supported by Artswork, the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, and Winchester School of Art Research Centre for Global Futures in Art, Design and Media.

Our Comms Writer, Laura, paid them a visit to uncover what was going on behind the mysterious moniker, and to discover what really constitutes as ‘doing nothing’.

ARTSMARK | Spotlight on...Oxfordshire Hospital School

"The Oxfordshire Hospital School (OHS) believes in using the arts as a tool for communication, expression and building self-esteem. The OHS comprises of three different settings, all providing education to young people not able to access their usual place of learning because of medical needs.

We’re part of the Artsmark process because we feel it provides a platform for celebrating excellence and is a recognised standard of arts delivery. We are using our Artsmark status to highlight and celebrate the value and importance of existing arts projects, as well as to challenge ourselves to exceed our own expectations for the future."

Hampshire Cultural Trust is seeking a seventh partner to work with us on a 4 year project funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation ‘Arts Based Learning: More and Better’ programme. The Horizon 20:20 More & Better Project aims to prove the positive impact that arts and culture has within education settings for hard to reach young people.

The first year of the project is currently underway with activity being delivered in six Local Authority-led Education Centres (PRUs) across Hampshire. Hampshire Cultural Trust is now looking to appoint a final seventh education partner for a further three years of the project.
