New Cases in Accounting & Finance

The newest cases from the Ivey case collection are available for review. View New Cases for more details on cases registered in your discipline.

Sirius XM Radio Canada

On April 11, 2011 the merger between Canadian Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. (the parent company of XM Canada) and SIRIUS Canada Inc. (SIRIUS Canada) had received the approval of CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission). The merger of XM Canada and SIRIUS Canada was not going to be easy. Both organizations had been fierce competitors, but it was clear that their survival was dependant on a successful merger. This case looks at the challenges of integrating the merger of two competitors. Students are asked to consider all of the issues in a merger integration including: organizational structure, selection of a new management team, operations and IT system synergies, financing, and capital structure. Students will have to look at the alternatives for each issue as well as how each issue relates to one another. There are also risks associated with these decisions that could have devastating consequences. The complexity of this merger integration also gives students some insight into why so many mergers and acquisitions fail to live up to expectations.

Groupon and the SEC

Groupon provides an opportunity to review Groupon Inc's S1 filing made prior to an IPO. The case can be used at a relatively early stage to illustrate the potentially profound effect of revenue recognition policies and the potentially incomplete picture provided by non-GAAP earnings measures. The case features real published financial statement data as well as SEC letters related to the agency's investigation of Groupon's accounting practices. Groupon is a well known and highly publicised firm, and many students will have used 'Groupons' and participated in the corporation's promotions. The case provides an opportunity for students to address complex and practice oriented financial accounting matters in the context of a company with which they are familiar and which they find to be appealing. The case presents these issues with rich institutional detail and actual public documents as a means of grounding case discussion.

Ford Motor Company: Accounting for Deferred Taxes

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is considering whether to reverse the valuation allowance it has recorded over its deferred tax assets. The case focuses on the judgment required when evaluating the recoverability of deferred tax assets. Assessing whether the "more likely than not" criterion is achieved requires an assessment of future as well as past profitability. Further, the perceptions of users must be considered. This case is well suited to a graduate or undergraduate course in financial reporting. Ford will serve to help students understand the nature of deferred taxes and the impact of deferred taxes on the income statement and balance sheet. Further, the decision of how to present a valuation allowance reversal allows students to consider presentation and disclosure issues associated with financial reporting.
