Backflip: Feminism and humour in Contemporary Art
26 April - 25 May

Featuring work by Australian and international artists, Backflip seeks to challenge the ongoing stereotype of feminism as dry, dull and humourless. The exhibition affirms laughter as an important and potent tool for feminist artists across generations, geographies and political contexts. Following last year’s sell-out lecture by the Guerrilla Girls at the VCA, Backflip presents a range of approaches from slapstick to satire, detouring through irony and black humour.

Is singing ability in twins inherited?

Researchers from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and School of Psychological Sciences are leading a world-first study to investigate if singing ability is inherited in twins.  The study, which has attracted much media attention, will explore if it is nature or nurture that most influences whether we can sing a pitch-perfect tune. While much research has investigated the influence of environmental factors such as exposure to music on singing ability, this study aims to investigate the genetic factors at play.  The findings may help us better understand how singing is best taught.
