In this month’s addition the First Home Super Saver (FHSS) scheme that will come into effect from 1 July 2018 is brought into light. The month of June is reviewed in Morningstar’s Australian Economic Update and three topics of interest are discussed in this months ‘Frankly speaking’ section.

First Home Saver

The FHSS scheme allows eligible individuals to utilise their superannuation to save a portion of the money required for a home deposit. It does this by allowing the release of voluntary contributions up to certain limits, along with associated earnings from 1 July 2018. Eligible contributions from 1 July 2017 can count towards the scheme.

Morningstar’s Australian Economic Update for June 2018

The world economic expansion is still trucking along, although it has become a bit more dependent than previously on the U.S. economy, and should support some further equity gains, although against a background of rising political risks—especially the risk of trade wars. Fixed interest and other income-oriented asset classes continue to be challenged by the prospect of rising inflation and tighter monetary policy.

In Australia, there have been some promising signs that the pace of business activity is picking up, although the benefits for growth assets are being held back by the ongoing weakness of the financial stocks.
