From The Principal

A very warm welcome back to Term 2. As the new principal, the thing that I have been most impressed with is the friendliness and delightful manners of the students of Subiaco Primary. It is lovely to see everyone so happy to be at school and so focussed on their learning in the classrooms. We have very quickly moved through Week 2 and I am delighted to be able to say that it is business as usual. Our children have already been engaged in a wide range of learning opportunities and doing their very best.

As a leader it is important I listen to feedback and make decisions, in consultation with all key stakeholders, that benefit the whole school community. I welcome the feedback the community offers and also the advice and counsel from the staff at Subiaco primary school and my colleagues from the broader network. I look forward to working with staff, students, parent and carers to ensure better educational outcomes for our students.

Anzac Day

Last week we commemorated Anzac Day at Subiaco Primary. It was powerful, poignant and professional. Well done to the staff and students for making it such a memorable service. By building young children’s understandings about the traditions, facts and folklore of Anzac Day, the many real life stories of sacrifices and heroism of everyday Australians will not be lost, but be handed down to future generations.

Australian Early Development Census

In early 2021, our school, along with thousands of others across the country will begin preparations for the fifth Australian Early Development Census (AEDC).

The AEDC gives us a national picture of the development, health and wellbeing of children in their first year of full-time school. Since 2009, the census results have helped communities, schools and governments plan services and develop better policies to target support for children and families.

Children don’t miss any class time, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information for the census. The AEDC gives us data at a school and community level - it isn’t an assessment of individual children.

Some teachers have also noticed that completing the assessments made them more aware of the needs of individual children and the class as a whole and that the census results are useful in planning for transitions to Year 1 and developing class programs.

Participation in the AEDC is voluntary. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census.

To find out more about the census and how communities are using the data to help children and families visit the AEDC website: www.aedc.gov.au.

Installation of Laneway Bollards

The City of Subiaco have installed new bollards at the entrance to the library laneway just outside the gates near the M Block. The bollards have been installed to reduce traffic flow during drop off and pick up times. Please talk to your children about safety and in particular the need to continue to be aware of their surroundings as they cross roadways, lanes, and paths on their way to and from school. This message will be reinforced by the school.

  • Will take place in the UPPER HALL on the mornings of Tuesday 4, Wednesday 5 & Friday 7 May between 8:00-9:00am.
  • Due to multiple year levels involved, it is the responsibility of parents to take their children directly to the Sibling Photo Shoot Location on their designated day.  To help even out the number of families per day, designated days will vary from family to family depending on the first letter of your surname/last name:

        Surnames A – H Tuesday 4 May
        Surnames I – O Wednesday 5 May
        Surnames P – Z Friday 7 May

If the allocated day does not suit your family, there is flexibility to have your sibling photos taken on one of the other mornings.

Playground Supervision

Playground supervision is an essential element in staff’s duty of care. It is now clearly established that in supervising students, staff's duty of care is one of positive action. It is important to note that students are usually less constrained and more prone to accident and injury in the playground than in a more closely supervised classroom.

The staff at Subiaco Primary School are rostered for duty, and attend designated duty areas throughout recess and lunch.
Morning playground supervision is provided from 8.30am, to keep students safe who arrive early, they are required to assemble and wait on the steps outside the staffroom until formal supervision commences at 8.30am.

Please note -There is no community access to the Year 1, Kindy and PP playground prior to 8.30am in the morning and after 3.30pm in the afternoon.

Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease

There has been a reported case of Hand, Foot and Mouth disease in the school.

Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a mild viral infection caused by different human viruses and is spread when a person touches the mucous or saliva, or the faeces (poo) of an infected person.

Everyone is susceptible to infection, but many adults will have developed immunity to this infection as a child. No specific treatment is required for this infection. However, treatment may be necessary to relieve symptoms such as blisters in the mouth.

Curriculum

Anzac Service
Our Anzac Service was held on the morning of Thursday 22 April. It was a beautiful sunny day, and the service was very moving. Dariya Yavisheva, Archie Cox and Anika Gupta did a great job leading our school through the various proceedings. Awa Hemida read Mustafa Kemal Ataturk’s tribute to the memory of the ANZACs, and Aryana Borjian recited the Ode of Remembrance. Zachary Ogden, from WAAPA, played The Last Post and The Rouse, and the Subiaco School Choir sang beautifully under the direction of our Music Specialist, Mr Andrew Angel. Special thanks to the Perth Male Voice Choir for supplying and setting up the choir staging. And congratulations to all our students for their respectful listening throughout the service. This Month On SchoolTV - Raising Girls

Raising girls in today’s modern world can be a difficult path for parents and carers to navigate. These days, girls are transitioning to puberty a lot earlier than they used to and the physical, psychological and emotional changes they experience are challenging. As a result, by mid-adolescence, girls are twice as likely to develop mood disorders more so than boys.

Some parents and carers may feel uncertain about how best to support their daughter through the ups and downs of adolescence and how to keep the lines of communication open. With the rise of social media and technology, mental health difficulties in girls are increasing as often they are faced with online images that make it difficult to see themselves as acceptable. Ensuring a daughter’s opinions are heard and her views listened to, will go a long way towards making her feel loved and supported as she tries to establish her own identity.

In this edition of SchoolTV, adult carers will attain a clearer picture of what girls are wanting from their adult carers and how best to support them through adolescence. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition, and we always welcome your feedback.

If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please seek further information or medical or professional help.

Reminders

Suspicious Activity On School Grounds
On weekends and holidays we sometimes have unwanted behaviour and vandalism on our school grounds. Please call Education Security on 9264 4632 or 9264 4771 if you see anything suspicious.

School Grounds After Hours
We would like to remind parents that students should not be on the school grounds out of school hours unless accompanied by an adult. This includes not only after school, but on the weekends and during the school holidays. The school grounds are being used more and more by a wide range of community members, and the school staff cannot be held responsible for the safety of the students outside school hours.
