Greetings from your Community BoardMessage from the ChairKia ora koutou, As you can see from the list of fun summer events coming to the Community Board for support, the improving weather is very much on everyone's minds. You've been part of some lovely events over the past couple of weeks – the fairy village evacuation was a great success, as you can see for yourself in the video we link to below, and the planting day at QEII Park was an emotional occasion that will have a lasting impact – the area they've created, with the special 'heart' bench within it, will be a very special area of the park for generations to come. Thank you to everyone who volunteered for these efforts. Keep being kind and look after one another. Kia kaha. Highlights from our latest meetingOur Community Board met on Monday 5 October. The Board approved a $1000 grant from its 2020–21 Discretionary Response Fund to Spencerville Residents’ Association, where it will be put towards a Spencerville River Clean Up and Fun Day 2020. With the day planned to include Pedalmania, a children's entertainer, a bouncy castle and water orb ball costs, it should be a fun and fulfilling day out for the community. We also considered applications to the Coastal-Burwood 'Summer with your Neighbours' 2020–21 fund, with the available funds going towards more great-sounding community BBQs, parties and events. You can read the minutes to see what else we discussed and find out the dates, times and details of upcoming Community Board and Council meetings here. Planting day at QEII ParkOn Sunday 20 September, a 'planting day with heart' was held at the Eco-Action Trust’s QEII Park site with Heart Kids NZ. There were 21 families (making 68 people in total) who came along and planted 150 Muehlenbeckia astonii in remembrance of the much-loved children and family members lost to heart conditions. By all accounts, the event was a fun and healing experience that created a future oasis of reflection within QEII Park – these green toanga will grow and create a wonderful glade for mindfulness surrounding the specially-made 'heart bench' for generations to come. Fairy village spirited away to new locationOgres and trolls will no longer be bothering the fairies in Bottle Lake Forest Park. The fairy village was successfully moved to a new, safer location within the park on 29 September thanks to the efforts of Christchurch City Council rangers and a team of young volunteers. You can watch a cute video of the big move on Newsline. Ascot Community Centre updateThe Council is asking for expressions of interest from groups to manage the Ascot Community Centre in QEII Park. The community centre is currently used by the Ascot Petanque Club, a gentle exercise group, an older adults’ social group, the New Brighton Photographic Club and a Scrabble group. Other groups also hire the community centre on a casual basis. We want all existing hall hirers to continue to use the centre in the future, and for the new management group to also look for other groups or activities to use the space. More information about the Expression of Interest (EOI) process is available here. The EOI closes on Friday 30 October at 5pm. Christchurch Surface Water Quality ReportWater quality in most Christchurch waterways has remained steady, the latest research shows. Christchurch City Council has just published its annual Christchurch Surface Water Quality Report, an analysis of water quality data collected throughout 2019. Waterways are monitored at 42 sites across the district, with more than 11,000 tests being conducted. Of the samples tested, 20 percent did not meet quality guideline levels and 98 percent of sites did not meet guideline levels for at least one of the quality factors measured. Some of the events happening in the Coastal-Burwood area include: Tell us what’s important for Greater Christchurch in 2050...The Greater Christchurch 2050 survey is now open for feedback. While the year 2050 might seem a long time away, in order to meet the future needs of our communities, we need to start planning now. People tell us the thing they love most about living here is the lifestyle. We need to work together to make the most of our strengths and attract and retain people, business and investment while protecting what’s important to us. That’s why the Greater Christchurch Partnership is creating a new plan for our sub-region with everyone that has an interest in the area. Greater Christchurch 2050 will describe the kind of place we want for our future generations, and the actions we need to take over the next 30 years to make it happen. This work will culminate in a plan that is real and has achievable actions that can be delivered by the partner organisations. We want to hear what you think Greater Christchurch should look like in 30 years. Do our short survey – it should take around five minutes. You will be able to give feedback until Sunday 8 November 2020.
