Banks Peninsula Community News - 10 September 2020

Christchurch City Council

Greetings from your Community Board

Message from the Chair

Kia ora koutou,
Spring is in the air and the daffodils are popping out everywhere you look. If you're a green thumb, there are plenty of planting days coming up across the Peninsula - check the Council  website for more information.
It's great to see such strong interest from our community in regards to Council's proposal to deal with treated wastewater from Akaroa, with 340 submissions received from people and organisations. Applications are now open for the revamped Sustainability Fund, which will focus on encouraging community, school, social enterprise or business projects that help meet our climate change objectives. I look forward to seeing some innovative projects for our Banks Peninsula community.
Keep being kind and look after one another. Kia kaha.

Chair of the Community Board

Board Chair, Tori Peden

 Highlights of our latest meeting

Our Community Board met on Monday 7 September. Some highlights of our meeting included hearing from local residents as part of our Public Forum and Banks Peninsula Parks Team and briefed on the parks maintenance arrangements. We also approved funding for a number of fantastic community projects as part of our Strengthening Communities Fund for 2020 - 2021. You can read the minutes to see what else we discussed and find out the dates, times and details of upcoming Community Board and Council meetings here.

Simeon Quay stairway closure

We've closed the stairs beside the new Simeon Quay pump station for the next few weeks so we can safely construct the new retaining wall and footpath. These stairs connect Simeon Quay to the Bridle Path, and right now detours are in place via London Street, Dublin Street and Norwich Quay. This wok is part of the Lyttelton Harbour Wastewater Project, which will connect the Harbour's wastewater to the main Christchurch treatment plant and end the discharge of treated wastewater into Lyttelton Harbour.

Update on Governors Bay foreshore track

Work on the Governors Bay foreshore track is well underway as our contractors lay new pipeline and electrical cabling to connect the Jetty Road pump station with the new Governors Bay pump station.
Around 40 metres of the 400 metre replacement sewer pipeline has been installed underneath the foreshore track near the treatment plant. Ducting for the electrical cable is progressing at the same time.  We are backfilling this site as we go, and will ensure this is backfilled before the start of each weekend to accommodate path users. Work is on track to be completed around the end of October 2020.
