pick up a double pass to Abbe May this Friday night at mojos bar, Fremantle!
Sures, direct from Sydney, are playing Mojos Bar on Thursday May 17 with cool psyche rock locals Blackmilk and The Deep River Collective. Check Sures tune Poseidon while you're with us.
Amber Fresh reviews Human Xerox. This show at the Bakery featured Frozen Ocean, Gunns, Runner, Cow Parade Cow & Candied Limbs who all recorded a version of the Rabbit Island tune My Own Private. Amber is Rabbit Island.
Lyndon Blue reviews Mothers Day. That's right & he takes down Christmas, Easter & Valentines Day - it's a Hallmark calendar day slaughter. Mothers Day as he determines - with help from Craig McElhinney, Matt Acorn, Amber Fresh, his own Mother & Pete bibby - has a resonance of relevance. Well done Mothers Day, more to the point well done Mum.
Christopher Isaacs brings the Perth International Comedy Festival to your attention. Formerly known as the The Wild West Comedy Festival, this years incarnation & those thereafter are incorporating wider known talent such as Michael Workman at the Astor [starting tonight].
Abbe May plays Mojos Bar this Friday. First to reply here gets a free double pass.

Amber Fresh: live reviews
Human Xerox Launch: Gunns, Frozen Ocean, Runner, Cow Parade Cow, Candied Limbs @ The Bakery, May 12 2012
Last night I was watching Q and A at a commune in Lockridge. The night before that I was sitting on my friend’s porch asking him in my head “So…. Are you pretty much a lady’s man?” but not asking it out loud. The night before that I was at the Bakery…
Yep.
So Matt Aiken’s done this project where he got lots of people to all cover one song of one band. It’s called Human Xerox. This time he picked a song called “My Own Private”. Then he got a bunch of bands to play at a launch for it. I know as a fact that there were...

MOTHER'S DAY 2012, SUNDAY MAY 13
Of all the highlighted dates on the Hallmark board room calendar, I’m not sure which one is the most preposterous. Christmas is a major contender: during the aptly named ‘silly season,’ nearly everyone (religious inclination notwithstanding) uses the two-thousand-year-old excuse of a baby’s birth in a barn in Bethlehem to gather with relatives they might have been avoiding and eat food until they lose consciousness. Easter is a crowd favourite for weirdest holiday: that baby – aka Good Guy Jesus – grows up, gets an A+ in “being a messiah,” then dies nailed to a crucifix so that the rest don’t have to suffer eternal damnation. And then he comes back as a zombie and flies away. So what do we do in his honour?

christopher isaacs: in the black box
laughing with a new era: The 2012 Perth International Comedy Festival
Over the previous three years Perth has had a comedy festival called The Wild West Comedy Festival. In its time the WWCF had some good acts, but mostly concentrated itself around the WA comedians with only a few national and international acts making appearances. This year a new festival of comedy has been packing out audiences over the last couple of weeks. The Perth International Comedy Festival has debuted thus far with some real style, and the good news is there are still a few acts to be seen this week.

Fundraising Theatre Night: Minefields and Miniskirts
at harbour theatre, fremantle
If history is told by the victors, the story of war is usually told by the blokes. Now it's the ‘sheilas' turn. Nearly 1000 Australian women had a part in the Vietnam War as entertainers, journalists, volunteers and nurses. The one thing they have in common is that their lives were changed forever by Vietnam. For many of them it was the most vital and alive they have ever felt. This is their story.

Jugular (-not relevant in any sense-)
at the fly by night, fremantle
Careening works of tone burn holes through the lace of your fancy collar, visuals of alien scenes, grim portraits, chaotic swirls of colour, the folk sounds happy and makes you sad, the electronic makes your chest buzz and fills your head with lush lyrical oddity, a vigorous and sweaty bunch will posses your imagination with a lashing beat and a wavering voice. With a haggard cry the blues rock will roll and gets the thrashing beneath the dim lights.
JUGULAR will ever so wholesomely commence these situations with the grace of an Arctic cat, TEN MOUNTAINS will bring the Blues, THE MOLTENS the Punk, SEAN THOMAS will start the acoustics, THE GIZZARDS the electronic based cocktail known as circuit bent concept swamp pop and PUBLIC HOUSING will produce a burning noise to scour the loose hope from your insides. Then shrug it off, walk in circles a minute and out into the rain.
$5. Entry from 8pm.

Digitalism LIVE and Adrian Lux
at villa nightclub, perth
TICKETS
Some bands are dance and some are indie, some are pop and some are punk, but very few cover all bases with equal aptitude and pizzazz. DIGITALISM certainly do.
The duo are often compared to Daft Punk by lazy reviewers. Sure; it’s true both are known for throwing down exceptional beats - but the similarity ends there. Digitalism are German, not French and human, not robots. Julian Casablancas became so fond of 'em he left The Strokes long enough to co-write song 'Forrest Gump' for their stunning new album I Love You Dude; the follow-up to 2007's instantly danceable Idealism LP and the ballistic Blitz EP.

The Fancy Brothers cd launch
at clancy's bar, fremantle
Those spiritually courageous bastard-fools of boograss, THE FANCY BROTHERS finally unleash their long avoided debut album for the benefit of all mankind. After misleading WA’s festivals for the past few years, The Fancy Brothers took their questionable talents into Perth’s Loop Studios for two days and belted out 14 dubious bluegrass tunes about death, love, the death of love and trains and came out with a rare record of events never to be repeated. From as low as a coaster to the dizzying heights of a frisbee to the introspection of a hand mirror, this versatile album will have you dancing like a hillbilly and crying like a mule in the arms of your best friend’s mum. Bring her along to the album launch party at Clancy’s Fremantle with support from BILLY ROGERS and THE COUNTRY GENTLEMEN.

The exhibition, which runs until June 3 at
Bivouac on William Street, is called MILK - an
opaque white fluid secreted by female mammals for
the nourishment of their young.

Mini Art Mart presents Carly Nasso
at ruck rover general store, mt lawley
Carly Nasso has had 20 years of exhibiting diminutive, collaged paintings and drawings of curious characters.
After living all her life in the city, Carly and her young family moved to a small Mid Western town on the edge of the wheatbelt in Western Australia. These works are directly influenced by the experience.
These new, one-off works are created with an array of materials including felt, paper, pencil, felt pen, crayon and paint.
The unusual characters are sometimes animalistic and not quite human. They exist in a world where nature and science combine with fantasy and emotion.
Carly is exhibiting at Mini Art Mart, inside Ruck Rover General Store, through May 2012.

Metamorphosis (Group Exhibition)
at free range gallery, perth
Metamorphosis; a change of the form or nature of a thing or person into a completely different one.
Curated by Perth artist Marijke Loosjes, this exhibition focuses on the notion of influence within the artistic world, more importantly the influence artists have on one another. It can range from harsh derivatives to works of art with invisible guidance.
Twelve artists were chosen to participate, paired together, one artist created a piece based around the theme of Metamorphosis, the other artist then responded to this piece. The result being two works of art, in different mediums yet with influential ties. The viewer is able to study the relationship between the pairs, within this structure the concepts are isolated and exposed.
Ideas have always been built upon, changed, made intimate. They constantly evolve and take on new forms, Metamorphosis is an inquiry into this conceptual transmutation.
Artists: Bonnie Boogaard, Calliope Bridge, Alira Callaghan, Shaun Ferraloro, Kate Greenaway, Kia Groom, Marijke Loosjes, Tatjana Pilkington, Jessica Sorci, Fedor Valiev, Lance Ward, Tim Watson

Parrramatta Girls
at old mill theatre, perth
Real-life stories of former inmates at the notorious Parramatta Girls’ Training School in NSW have been combined to create a tragic and humorous yet uplifting play, making its WA premiere at the Old Mill Theatre this May.
Written by Alana Valentine and directed by Siobhan O’Gara, Parramatta Girls follows the story of eight girls at their 40-year reunion.
The girls were innocent victims of a harsh regime but had their own ways of coping with the system that oppressed them, trying to make good in tough times. When the system spat them out, they became the mothers, sisters, work mates and wives of Australia.
Parramatta Girls plays at 8pm, May 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 23, 24, 25 and 26 with a 2pm matinee May 20.
Tickets are $20, $15 concession – book on 9367 8719 or oldmilltheatre@iinet.net.au.

Stirling Players presents Face to Face
at stirling theatre, innaloo
A well-known Australian play will be presented with fresh eyes when young and emerging director Brendan Ellis brings David Williamson’s Face to Face to the Stirling Players stage in May.
As the first part of Williamson’s Jack Manning Trilogy, this dramatic and character-driven play takes its format in a realistic setting of ‘community conferencing.’
When a young construction worker rams into the back of his boss’s Mercedes in a fit of anger at being sacked, he is given the opportunity to discuss his actions in a community conference, rather than going straight to court.
This face-to-face confrontation between the young man, his boss, his boss's wife, co-workers, best mate and mother lifts the lid not only on his dysfunctional life but on their workplace dirty laundry, turning all of their lives upside down.
Community conferencing - an alternative method of justice that is relatively new to Australia - is explored by Williamson in this engaging and heartfelt play which celebrates the strength of community over our rigid and often seemingly unfair court system.
Face to Face plays at Stirling Theatre, Morris Place, Innaloo over 11-13, 17-20, 24-26 May 2012. All performances begin at 8pm, except for Sunday matinees at 2pm.
Bookings can be made from Tuesday 10 April 2012 through Morris News on 9440 1040. Tickets are $20 full, $18 concession and $14 members, with discounted group bookings available through Morris News.
This play contains some strong language and is suitable for mature audiences only.
