Dear

Lunch with Chris Stang, co-founder of The Infatuation, last Friday at Brat saw conversation turn to media and building a brand. In between mouthfuls of grilled turbot, we discussed our shared view of staying away from “click-led” content and instead focusing on articles that create brand loyalty.

You’ll know that at CODE we believe in print and it was nice to hear that Infatuation have similar views – they’ve recently purchased Zagat from Google. The latest issue of CODE Quarterly is now out – which features an interview with Stang – and for those of you who haven’t been able to get your hands on a copy, it’s now available online.

Have a good week.

Manifesto

It’s a strong name for a restaurant, and Manifesto, the new pizza place opening in July on Northcote Road in Clapham, means what it says. Owner Vittorio Maschio – one of Natoora’s founders – believes other pizzas to be cooked too fast and with poor quality cheese. The ingredients of Manifesto’s pizzas, he says, will have the very highest provenance – and there will be just six, plus one gourmet special.

Endo at The Berkeley

Endo Kazutoshi is probably one of our greatest sushi masters – the third generation of his family in the trade, he launched Zuma. Now Kazutoshi is launching a pop-up at the Berkeley hotel in Knightsbridge. From 20 July until the end of August, there will be a ‘hidden restaurant’ for eight guests serving a 15-course omakase menu. Sounds like a very cool place to dine during the summer heatwave.

Petroupoli

News of a further outpost for The Athenian – the popular Greek street-food operators are coming to Tooting Market. This branch, named Petroupoli, joins four sites in London and one in Bristol, and will serve the souvlaki and gyros that have made them famous. On opening day, 19 July, all souvlaki will be free.

Tapas Brindisa

Brindisa celebrates its thirtieth anniversary this year, and the brand created by Monika Linton goes from strength to strength. It has just announced it will open a restaurant in Battersea Power Station this November. For the first time, there will be a cheese and charcuterie bar in the 122-cover space, with room for a further 20 outside.

Opening...

A busy week for new restaurants: there’s Bottles, which opened its doors in Spitalfields Market on Friday (it’s a wine bar, natch). Kitty Fisher’s “sister” Cora Pearl opens tomorrow in Covent Garden, also the location of Abuelo, a coffee house and kitchen with a Australian/Latin American theme. By the end of the month the Chiringuito bar - also with Latin America at its heart - will be up and running in Bethnal Green and finally the Mr Fogg’s brand comes to Fitzrovia - its House of Botanicals opens on 26 July.

...and closing

Thankfully it’s only a temporary closure for Rovi, the newest restaurant for Yotam Ottolenghi. The Fitzrovia site had already contended with a massive crane outside on its first weekend of opening, but now a more serious glitch. The eco-friendly extraction system has not worked as planned and is to be replaced. The restaurant, which has Neil Campbell as head chef, plans to reopen within the week.

Graham Hall

Drake & Morgan has announced the appointment of Graham Hall as its new Director of Operations. Hall joins from Ennismore and has more than 15 years experience in hospitality, having started at Living Ventures. Drake & Morgan currently runs 23 bars and restaurants in London, Manchester and Edinburgh, with plans to expand further.

Christine Parkinson

Christine Parkinson of the Hakkasan Group has been given the Wine and Spirit Ambassador Award at this year’s ‘Cateys’. Parkinson, Group Head of Wine for the restaurant operators, is indeed a terrific role model – as well as buying wine, she is a frequent judge of drinks competitions herself, and her wine lists are multi-award-winning.

To temper City last night for the Too Many Critics dinner in aid of Action Against Hunger. Tracey MacLeod won the critic’s sauce competition with her version of Chimichurri and close to £20,000 was raised on the night. Despite the heat in the kitchen, no critics lost their temper.

The Cateys took place last Tuesday evening where Richard Corrigan picked up the award for best independent restaurateur of the year. Lazy Susan hears he celebrated with a lock-in back at Dickie’s Bar at Corrigan’s, which went well onto in the small hours.

The plans for the hotel that Robert De Niro was going to open in Covent Garden have been scrapped. The site, of which part of it was home to the original Joe Allen, had been earmarked for an 83-bedroom hotel with two restaurants. Little Fockers, some might say.

The Dumbwaiter had a drink in the newest bar in the Ned last week. The Library bar is the 17th watering hole in the City hotel and private members’ club. With its martini trolley and Champagne by the glass menu it should prove a popular spot for a liquid lunch.
