Faye Toogood presents Assemblage No:4 Roly-Poly at Milan Design Festival

Milan Salone

Tuesday 8 April to Sunday 13 April

Tues - Sat 11am - 7pm
Sun 12 - 4pm

Project B Gallery
Via Maroncelli 7
20154 Milano

Faye Toogood launches the latest iteration of her signature Assemblage furniture collection – Assemblage No. 4, subtitled Roly-Poly, embraces a world of soft lines and childlike rounded edges, an aesthetic that stands in direct contrast to the aggressive, postindustrial feel of her previous collection. Developed from clay maquettes, the pieces are crafted from sleek fibreglass-conventionally employed to craft boat hulls – to harness its unique tensile strength and sculptural qualities. The furniture collection comprises a low four-legged chair, a higher dining chair, a daybed with spherical headrest, a pedestal dining table and a new interpretation of Toogood’s iconic Element table.

Each piece features the Assemblage collection’s characteristic interplay of geometric elements, now imbued with a reassuring plumpness – legs are wide and chunky, seats edges smoothed and curvaceous. The colour scheme represents a sort of faded futurity – tones of soft cream or the nicotine-stained hues of aged Bakelite apparatus, rather than the gleaming whiteness of mid-century visions of tomorrow.

Complementing these glossy forms is a hand-woven Play tapestry which explores the collection’s geometric themes in a tactile form that teeters between two- and three-dimensional; the chair and daybed also feature hand-woven yarn throws in appropriately soft, milky shades. All pieces are, as ever with Faye Toogood, entirely designed and manufactured in Britain.

Indigo Storm by Faye Toogood for 1882 also launching at Milan Design Festival

Faye Toogood's new range of ceramic designs for 1882 Ltd celebrates the serendipitous beauty of natural imperfections. Indigo Storm, a new interpretation of traditional creamware forms, draws upon the chance patterns created when pigment added to the slip coating does not fully blend. The whorls and eddies resulting from these experiments, like meteorological formations in miniature, make up the collection's central motifs, appearing on pieces including jugs, plates, bowls and cups.

Representing a streamlined take on our ceramic heritage, the fine earthenware employs the familiar tones of English Delftware: cream offset with a rich, deep blue. All are made using centuries-old traditions in Stoke on Trent, better known as the "Five Towns" that make up the Staffordshire Potteries - the traditional heartland of Britain's china industry.
