Alcatraz Metal Festival pakt alweer groots uit en doet dat met een artiest die op zijn zachtst uitgedrukt tot de verbeelding spreekt. Niemand minder dan de Antichrist Superstar zelf: MARILYN MANSON. Ja, hij komt naar Kortrijk om er de eerste dag van het festival af te sluiten. Hebben we met Twisted Sister een band op de planken staan die in de jaren tachtig nog voor de nodige ‘politiek incorrecte’ opschudding zorgde, met Marilyn Manson weten we naar alle waarschijnlijkheid de meest controversiële artiest uit de voorbije twee decennia te strikken. Manson houdt van uitdagen, is zeer gesteld op vrijheid van meningsuiting, zegt waar het op staat en is er door de jaren heen met zijn aparte gevoel voor humor en intelligente snedigheid altijd in geslaagd om de fanatieke christenen des werelds moeiteloos in hun onderhemd te zetten. Ooit sprak hij de mythische woorden: ‘I wanna grow up, wanna be a big rock ’n roll star’. Wel kijk, dromen komen blijkbaar toch uit.  Hits als ‘The Dope Show’, ‘mOBSCENE, ‘I Don’t Like The Drugs (But The Drugs Like Me)’ en ‘The Beautiful People’ spreken nog steeds tot de verbeelding. De open air editie van vorig jaar is de organisatoren van Alcatraz Metal Festival én haar bezoekers meer dan goed bevallen. Het terrein en bijhorende infrastructuur van de campus leent zich dan ook uitstekend voor een festival als Alcatraz. De wel heel positieve reacties op de site en de fraaie omgeving is ook de mensen bij VIVES (vorig jaar nog gekend als KATHO) niet ontgaan. De  moderne, frisse en  groene open campus biedt heel wat mogelijkheden om naast het studeren ten volle van een gezellig studentenleven te genieten, maar VIVES steekt graag een tandje extra bij. Zo werd, na het succes van vorig jaar, vlug tot een akkoord gekomen om ook de zevende editie van AMF op het scholencomplex te laten plaatsvinden. De heel minieme overlast, de professionele aanpak, de ondersteuning van het Stadsbestuur en allerhande betrokken diensten, maar vooral de uitstekende sfeer en dito samenwerking liggen hiervan aan de basis. We zien er dan ook naar uit om onze bezoekers voor een tweede keer te ontvangen op VIVES, met hopelijk een al even spetterend resultaat als vorig jaar.

After announcing Twisted Sister – considered by many as the musical personification of the politically incorrect 80s – as their Saturday, August 9 – headliner, The Alcatraz Metal Festival (undeterred by controversy) has now added one of Rock music’s most creative and controversial artists to the 2014 line-up. Indeed, none other than MARILYN MANSON, the ‘Antichrist Superstar’, will headline the Courtrai event on the Friday night, August 8.
If anything Manson loves a challenge. Outspoken; a keen advocate of freedom of speech, he destabilizes his adversaries – often rightwing religious zealots – with an idiosyncratic sense of humour and intelligent repartee.
An American dream-come-true he once prophetically sang: ‘I wanna grow up, I wanna be a big Rock and Roll star,’ and that’s exactly what he did: become a humongous Rock Star. Today, hits like ‘The Dope Show’, ‘mOBSCENE’,  ‘I Don’t Like The Drugs (But The Drugs Like Me)’ and ‘The Beautiful People’, still stand out as distinctively classic tracks of the genre. And when he revisited anthems such as ‘Sweet Dreams’, ‘Personal Jesus’ and ‘Tainted Love’, he not only provided a second, alternative life for these songs, but made them his own.
His ascent took serious flight with the release of ‘Antichrist Superstar’, his second album, which sold seven million copies around the world. Marilyn Manson became a household name to great regret of various religious and other conventional groups.

The open air edition of last year was really nice for both Alcatraz Metal Fest organizers and its visitors. The site and related infrastructure lends itself perfectly for an event like Alcatraz Metal Festival. Also the people of VIVES (before 2014 known as KATHO) have noticed the dedication of the Alcatraz team and the very positive feedback as a result of their hard work. The open and modern green campus offers many opportunities to enjoy the study life but VIVES offers also that little extra. Soon after the success of last year we came to an agreement to make the seventh edition of AMF happen at the school complex. The minor inconvenience, the professional approach, the support of the City Council and various departments involved, but especially the excellent atmosphere and ditto cooperation are the fundament of this decision. We therefore look forward to receive our visitors for the second time at the VIVES festival area and hopefully with the same positive result as last year.
